Ponderosa: Wine, Jemez Culture, and Rock Country
Accommodation in Ponderosa
Getting There and the Scenic Byway
The Jemez Mountain Trail National Scenic Byway follows the Jemez River for several miles. Frequent stops offer opportunities for picnicking, camping, and fishing. A three-mile detour east from the byway on NM 290 leads to Ponderosa. The town is reached via Highway 4 and then Highway 290, also called Forest Road 10.
Wine Tastings and Local Wines
Ponderosa Winery offers wine tastings and winery tours; check seasonal operating details before your trip. The winery is known for Riesling and Pinot Noir. Visitors can take a bottle with them and enjoy it at nearby accommodations. This lets you combine the wine theme with both a visit and an overnight stay.
Jemez Culture and History
The Red Rock Trails at Walatowa offer a 1.5-mile self-guided hike. Hiking permits for the trails are available at the Walatowa Visitor Center. Guided tours about Jemez history and culture are offered to large groups by advance arrangement. This provides different options: a self-guided hike and, for large groups with advance reservations, a guided cultural tour.
The reddish color of the Red Rock Trails at Walatowa has influenced the traditional pottery of Jemez Pueblo. The Boletsakwa ruins date from 1350 to 1650. This archaeological dating provides a clear timeframe for the area's other cultural themes.
Forest, River, and Hiking Destinations
Paliza Group Campground lies north of Ponderosa, surrounded by ponderosa pines and offering views of mesas. From Ponderosa, reach it by traveling more than five miles northeast on Forest Road 10. Conditions on the unpaved road can vary. The season generally runs from mid-May through October; check the specific dates before your trip. The East Fork of the Jemez National Wild and Scenic River is accessible near the campground, though access conditions may vary.
Ponderosa Christian Camp is also nestled among tall ponderosa pines in the Santa Fe National Forest. The basalt rock formation Battleship Rock is an access point for trails to Hidden Falls and McCauley Springs; trails and access may vary depending on conditions.
Bouldering and Notable Rock Formations
The rock at the Ponderosa climbing area is volcanic tuff. Bouldering ranges from thin face problems to steep, overhanging routes, and includes both lowball and highball climbing. The Upper Deck bouldering area has many problems graded V0 to V14. The approach takes about 15 minutes; this time may vary depending on route conditions.
The Gilman Tunnels were tunnels on the former Santa Fe Northwestern Railway and were converted into a road through a canyon. Check road conditions before driving.
