Discover Sandoval through a variety of experiences: explore hiking trails and vast natural areas, or learn about the history and culture of Pueblo communities. When planning, it helps to match your interests with the specific conditions at each destination—for example, trail lengths, permits, or required appointments.

Landscapes Between High Desert and Mountains

The Ojito Wilderness southwest of San Ysidro spans more than 11,000 acres of rugged high desert. The Valles Caldera National Preserve offers a different landscape, where volcanic features meet diverse high-mountain ecosystems and abundant wildlife. The cultural history of this area dates back more than 10,000 years. In a typical year, birdwatchers in Sandoval County can also expect to see more than 200 species.

At Fenton Lake State Park, the lake lies against the backdrop of the Jemez Mountains and is surrounded by ponderosa pine forests. The Rio Cebolla flows through the park, and the lake offers opportunities for fishing and canoeing. Check current park notices before your trip. At Jemez Falls, water plunges 70 feet over a rocky cliff surrounded by boulders and pines. A trailhead in the Jemez Falls Picnic Area leads to the falls.

Hiking Trails and Viewpoints

The Cave Loop Trail in Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument is an easy 1.2-mile loop. Check current conditions before you travel. The Red Rock Trails offer a 1.5-mile self-guided hike; permits are required for these trails. The two hikes therefore differ not only in length but also in their requirements.

In the Ojito Wilderness, the Seismosaurus Trail leads to the site where a Seismosaurus skeleton was once excavated. The Hoodoo Trail ends at a viewpoint overlooking the scenic badlands. If you’d rather combine the landscape with a drive, one starting point for the Jemez Mountain Trail is in San Ysidro. The Gilman Tunnels are also part of the Jemez National Recreation Area in the Santa Fe National Forest. NM 485 provides access to the tunnels via a paved but narrow road; road conditions can change seasonally.

Pueblo History and Collections

The Coronado Historic Site includes the foundations of Kuaua Pueblo, built by Tiwa Pueblo people around 1300 AD. A square kiva excavated in 1935 revealed murals considered the finest pre-Columbian wall art in North America. An interpretive trail winds through the ruins. Covered picnic tables there offer views of the Rio Grande and the Sandia Mountains.

In Corrales, Casa San Ysidro is a historic house museum. The Minge Collection includes Hispanic and Pueblo weaving and pottery. At Jemez Historic Site, ancestors of today’s residents of Jemez Pueblo (Walatowa) built Pueblo Gisewa about 700 years ago. Between 1621 and 1625, Franciscan friars designed the stone church and convent building of San José de los Jémez there.

Culture and Practical Visit Planning

The Walatowa Visitor Center includes the Walatowa History Museum, which offers a cultural journey through the history and culture of the Hemish (Jemez). Guided tours at the Visitor Center are available by appointment Wednesday through Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Since schedules can change, confirm your appointment before you arrive. For a different kind of break, Jemez Hot Springs offers four outdoor pools filled with water containing more than 17 healing minerals.

When choosing a hotel, consider whether hiking trails, landscapes, or cultural sites will be the main focus of your stay. Destinations also differ in their visit requirements: permits are needed for the Red Rock Trails, tours at the Walatowa Visitor Center are by appointment, and it’s a good idea to check current road or park conditions before you travel.
