New England offers a wide range of experiences: Atlantic coastlines, extensive hiking trails, and places where maritime or colonial history comes to life. When planning a hotel stay, it helps to decide early what you want to focus on. Would you like to prioritize nature and trails, or are you especially interested in museums and historic routes?

Coastal Landscapes and Trails

Acadia National Park covers nearly 50,000 acres along the Atlantic coast of Maine. At Cape Cod National Seashore, the landscape is shaped by forty miles of sandy beaches, marshland, ponds, and higher ground. Visitors can choose from eleven hiking trails there. Trail availability may vary depending on park conditions, so checking the current situation can help with planning. If you’d rather explore by bike than on foot, the Province Lands Bike Trail is the longest bike trail in Cape Cod National Seashore.

New England’s major hiking trails also vary in length and route. The New England National Scenic Trail stretches for 215 miles through Connecticut and Massachusetts. Its landscapes include expansive views, agricultural land, unbroken forests, and broad river valleys. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail is a public footpath of more than 2,100 miles along the Appalachian ridgelines between Maine and Georgia. Katahdin, located in Baxter State Park, is its northern terminus. These details give a sense of two different scales: a route through two states and a long-distance trail along a mountain range.

History Along Trails and in Museums

In Boston, Boston National Historical Park is associated with the colonial struggle for independence and the nation’s founding and development. A marked route makes it easy to navigate several parts of the city: the Freedom Trail is 2.5 miles long and passes through Downtown Boston, the North End, and Charlestown. Its historical context and route offer two different ways to explore this part of the city’s history.

Maritime history comes to life at Mystic Seaport Museum, in a reconstructed New England coastal village. The collection includes the Charles W. Morgan, America’s oldest surviving commercial ship. At the Henry B. du Pont Preservation Shipyard, watercraft are restored and maintained using traditional shipbuilding techniques. The village, ship, and shipyard each highlight a different aspect of maritime heritage.

Old Sturbridge Village recreates a rural New England town from the early 19th century. The Museum Education Center includes four working hearths and a woodworking studio for hands-on workshops. Historic Patuxet Homesite offers a different historical perspective: visitors can learn about Indigenous peoples who have lived in this place for more than 12,000 years. At The Breakers, an audio tour shares personal accounts of life in the house; tour availability may change, so check before your visit.

Planning Your Stay

Nature experiences can also take different forms. Franconia Notch is a mountain pass with a parkway stretching from Flume Gorge to Echo Lake. Kayaks and pedal boats are available to rent at Echo Lake in Franconia Notch State Park. As rental operations may change seasonally, it’s best to check what’s available before your visit.

There are two airports to consider when traveling to Acadia National Park: Hancock County Airport is ten miles from the park, while Bangor International Airport is about an hour away. Flight availability may change, so check connections before finalizing your travel plans.

Whether your trip centers on coastal landscapes, longer hiking trails, or historic sites, New England offers a range of places to start. If you’re looking for hotels in New England, the places you want to visit can help guide your initial planning.
