Thayer County lies in south-central Nebraska, in the heart of Oregon Trail country. The Oregon Trail ran 24 miles from east to west through the county. There are also memorial sites, museums, lakes, and activities in Hebron. Depending on your interests, you can focus your time on Trail history, local culture, nature, or outdoor activities.

Oregon Trail History and Local Memorial Sites

Oregon Trail wagon ruts are located on private land near Alexandria. The Fort Butler Marker commemorates a stockade built in 1869. In Roosevelt Park stands the “World's Largest Covered Porch Swing,” which was moved there from the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp in 1991. These sites highlight different aspects of local history: the wagon ruts point to the Trail's route, the marker to a stockade, and the swing to its relocation.

Museums and Culture in Thayer County

The purpose of the Thayer County Historical Society & Museum is to collect, preserve, and exhibit objects and information about Thayer County. Visits are scheduled for Sundays and Wednesdays from 2 to 4 p.m., as well as by appointment; arrange your visit with the museum in advance.

The Bruning Opera House was built in 1907 and is still used for civic events. The Arts Council of Thayer County is a volunteer nonprofit group formed to operate the Majestic Theater as a community theater. In Thayer County, the Digital Theatre shows currently running movies in a modernized theater. These cultural sites offer different ways to connect with the area during a stay: local collections, civic events, and movies.

Lakes, Waterfowl, and Trails

The Alexandria State Recreation Area encompasses 55 acres of land and two lakes that together cover 46 acres of water. The Prairie Marsh Wildlife Management Area is two miles west of Bruning and is a waterfowl refuge. The two sites offer different connections to nature: the Recreation Area centers on lakes and designated land and water areas, while Prairie Marsh focuses on protecting waterfowl.

The Rock Island Walking and Biking Trail follows the Little Blue River through the southern part of Hebron.
