Valley County brings together nature, history, and culture to help you plan your trip. The Ord Hike/Bike Trail starts at Auble's Pond in Bussell Park and leads to the Lower Loup Natural Resources District Arboretum. Other highlights include historic Fort Hartsuff near Elyria, The Golden Husk theater on Ord's town square, and the North Loup River. This gives you a range of options for your stay.

Trails, Trees, and Water

The Ord Hike/Bike Trail follows Dane Creek and crosses it via a metal bridge. Its start and end points give the route a clear framework: Auble's Pond is in Bussell Park, while the Arboretum is at the other end. The creek and bridge are specific features of the trail; its destination offers a different natural highlight.

The Lower Loup Natural Resources District Arboretum includes native and non-native trees and shrubs. On its east side are a wetland and an observation station. The site therefore brings together a variety of natural features: trees and shrubs alongside a wetland, with the observation station on its eastern side. This makes it a distinctive highlight for nature enthusiasts at the end of the trail.

The North Loup River offers a different kind of nature experience: it serves as a waterway for canoeing. East of Ord, the river is fed by groundwater and has a sandy riverbed; it is accessible at Anderson Island. If you're choosing between a trail route and a water activity, this distinction is a practical guide: the trail leads from the park to the Arboretum, while the river is for canoeing.

Local History and Historic Sites

Fort Hartsuff near Elyria served as an infantry outpost on the Nebraska prairie from 1874 to 1881. The historic buildings are open to visitors from May through September; visits by appointment are possible year-round. The park grounds are open daily. The buildings therefore have seasonal opening hours, with additional access by appointment. Check visiting conditions before your trip if you'd like to see the historic buildings.

The Valley County Museum presents the history of Valley County through photographs, books, room arrangements, and special collections. The Evelyn Sharp marker is at Evelyn Sharp Airfield in Ord. The two places represent different scales of history: the museum conveys the county's history through a variety of exhibits, while the marker is a specific named site at the airfield.

Theater, Community Culture, and Events

The Golden Husk is a historic theater on Ord's town square. Its name refers to walls made of corn husks, which were used for their acoustic properties. This connection between theater history and choice of material gives the place a distinctive cultural character.

The communities of Ord, Arcadia, North Loup, and Elyria work together continuously through the Valley County Creative District to promote the district's creative offerings. Unlike the single theater, this initiative centers on collaboration among several communities. North Loup Popcorn Days is also part of the region's cultural identity: it is Nebraska's longest continuously running festival.

The summer season at Birkel Circle Race Track in North Loup runs from April through October; races take place on Saturday or Sunday afternoons. Since the schedule may change, check before your trip whether your visit coincides with a race day. Scratchtown Brewing Company also brews and serves a selection of locally made craft beers.
