Forest Trails, Rivers and Outdoor Activities

Busiek State Forest and Wildlife Area has more than 18 miles of well-marked trails for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and birdwatching. The trail network is divided into a 10-mile East Trail and an 8-mile West Trail. Both areas include several color-coded loops ranging from 2 to 4 miles long. This lets you factor trail length into your plans without equating the loops with the longer trail sections. Check trail conditions before you arrive.

Two Rivers Mountain Bike Park offers more than 14 miles of purpose-built multi-use trails for mountain bikers, runners and hikers. It is located at the confluence of the Finley River and James River and encompasses 380 acres of Ozark landscape. Chadwick Motorcycle and ATV Use Area offers a different experience: it has 80 miles of trails for motorcycles, ATVs and UTVs, ranging from easy to challenging. Before riding, check with the U.S. Forest Service about operating rules and possible closures.

The Finley River provides a scenic connection to the James River watershed, with calmer stretches of river and opportunities to explore the Ozarks. Finley River Park features walking trails, picnic areas and playgrounds, as well as river access for kayaking and fishing. Mountain Springs Trout Park allows both catch-and-keep and catch-and-release fishing; a fishing license is not required. Confirm current requirements directly with the park before your visit. The James River and its tributaries also offer opportunities for kayaking and canoeing, fishing, swimming, and bird and wildlife watching. Many major public access points are in neighboring communities. So check in advance which access point is suitable for your planned activity.

Wildlife enthusiasts can take guided tours at National Tiger Sanctuary focused on animal care, conservation and ecology. The 45-minute Awareness Tour follows a 0.25-mile trail and gives visitors the chance to learn about around 15 to 20 big cats. The number of animals visitors see may vary, as they move between their habitats.
