Moniteau County: History, Architecture and Nature
Accommodation in Moniteau County
The Moniteau County Courthouse Square in California and the Finke Opera House reflect different sides of local history. The Square is listed on the National Register of Historic Places; the Finke Opera House, a two-story brick building dating from 1885, is also known as the Ritz Theater. Together with other historic sites, a museum and destinations for outdoor activities, they offer various starting points for planning your stay.
Architectural History and Heritage
Throughout its history, the Finke Opera House was California’s only opera house. Later, as the Ritz Theater, it was also the city’s only movie theater. The two names point to different phases in its entertainment history, while the brick building dating from 1885 brings the physical structure into focus.
The Louis Bruce Farmstead Historic District forms the core of a farm that covered more than 400 acres and was worked by the Bruce family between 1859 and 1881. Assumption Catholic Church in rural Moniteau County is an example of the central steeple church type. The term draws attention to a specific architectural feature: the central position of the steeple. In Tipton, the Maclay Mansion, also called Rosehill Seminary, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The High Point Historic District in High Point is also listed. Together, these examples show different scales of local history—from an individual building to a district and the core of a larger farm.
Fair History and Museum Visit
The Moniteau County Fair was organized on August 8, 1859, in California, Missouri. Its history is also tied to an ongoing annual tradition. The Moniteau County Historical Society shares the stories of the county through exhibits, archives and community programs. Its museum is open from the first Sunday in April through the third Sunday in October, on the first and third Sundays from 1 to 3 p.m. If you plan a museum visit, keep this time window in mind and check the opening hours before your visit.
Nature and Outdoor Activities
Manito Lake Conservation Area is in western Moniteau County near Fortuna. To reach Tipton Park Lake, take Highway 5 and Wade Boulevard from the intersection of Highways 50 and 5. These directions give you a specific starting point for your journey.
The history of Plowboy Bend Conservation Area also tells of a changing landscape: after the floods of 1993 and 1995, farmland there began to turn into woodland. The area’s name comes from a 19th-century steamboat that sank in the nearby Missouri River. This place therefore brings together land development following historic floods and a story connected to the river.
Proctor Park includes a one-mile walking trail and a disc golf course. The stated length offers a clear guide for a walk; the disc golf course provides another way to spend time outdoors. Consider whether the walking trail or disc golf better fits your plans for your stay.
