The Yazoo River winds past Satartia and Yazoo City. Yazoo County is also diverse on land: flat Delta fields give way to gently rolling areas with cliffs and ravines in wind-deposited loess bluffs. Cultural history, local music traditions, and expansive landscapes each give your trip a different focus.

Landscapes and notable places

Panther Swamp National Wildlife Refuge spans more than 40,000 acres and extends across Yazoo and Humphreys counties. This county boundary is important for orientation: the refuge is not located exclusively in Yazoo County.

Lake George Mounds also requires careful planning: the site is on private property. It is also known as Holly Bluff. Originally, there were as many as 28 mounds there; the site is among the largest continuously inhabited Native American sites in Mississippi. Its scale and long history of habitation make it an important part of the region’s historic heritage, but its private-property status remains a key consideration for visitors.

Wolf Lake offers a different scale: the lake is 18,000 acres and 15 miles long. Annual crappie and bass fishing tournaments are among the activities associated with it. Check current tournament dates before your trip if you would like to plan your stay around them.

History and stories in Yazoo City

In Yazoo City’s Town Center Historic District, you can explore homes and churches on walking or driving tours. The city’s Glenwood Cemetery dates back to at least 1856. There is a grave surrounded by chain links, known as “The Witch’s Grave.” It is associated with the Yazoo legend, according to which a witch is said to have set the city on fire in 1904.

Tours of Glenwood Cemetery are available for groups or individuals. They must be arranged in advance and include costumed storytellers. If you are interested in this way of presenting history, plan your tour before your visit.

The area’s musical history also offers notable points of connection. The Blue Front Café was opened in 1948 by Carey and Mary Holmes, an African American couple from Bentonia. It is recognized as a historically significant Delta blues site and has a Mississippi Blues Trail marker. The Bentonia School refers to a guitar-playing style attributed to blues musicians from Bentonia. A shared repertoire, distinctive guitar tunings and chord progressions, and a pronounced minor-key sound characterize this style.

Cultural sites and local history

The B.S. Ricks Memorial Library is the oldest public library building in Mississippi still in use. It was designated a Mississippi Literary Landmark because of its connection to writer Willie Morris. Here, a broader perspective on literary history meets a specific historic building.

The Triangle Cultural Center serves tourists as an educational and cultural center. Its features include the Sam Olden Yazoo Historical Society Museum, the William Duke Carter Collection of Antique Tools, a theater, and arts and music offerings. Its range extends from historical collections to cultural programming; these individual features give the center its multifaceted character.

Travel planning: roads, dates, and cuisine

Bell Road brings together several periods of historic use in a single road: it is still in use and is sunken. It was originally created as a Native American trail, and ox carts later traveled along it. It is so narrow that only one vehicle can pass through at a time. This specific road width should be taken into account when planning a drive.

The 2026 Yazoo County Fair is scheduled for October 16–24 in Yazoo City. Check the dates if your trip takes place at a later time. Other plans also have their own timing requirements: cemetery tours must be arranged in advance, and you should confirm Wolf Lake fishing tournament dates beforehand. These differences help you plan your stay around actual event dates and scheduled tours.

For a meal in Yazoo City, P-Reaux’s Cajun Mudbugs & Shrimp serves crawfish, steamed shrimp, and seafood gumbo. As the menu may change, check it before your visit. Local cuisine and cultural sites add to the options for shaping your trip around your own interests.
