Holly Springs: Architecture and History

The Holly Springs Courthouse Square Historic District forms the commercially oriented center of Holly Springs and is architecturally and historically significant to the state of Mississippi. The East Holly Springs Historic District lies to the east and covers 95 acres. This distinguishes two named districts in the city’s history: the commercially oriented center and a district farther to the east.

In Holly Springs, you can take a driving tour of more than 25 historic antebellum homes. Burton Place in Holly Springs was built in 1848 and later extensively restored. Montrose is a house museum in the Greek Revival style, dating to around 1858. The homes and the driving tour provide distinct, tangible ways to explore architectural history.

The Ida B. Wells-Barnett Museum is located in the Spires Bolling House in Holly Springs, where Wells-Barnett was born. The museum welcomes visitors by appointment Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. Confirm visiting arrangements before you arrive. The Yellow Fever Martyrs Museum tells the story of the heroes and victims of the 1878 yellow fever epidemic in Holly Springs and also presents the history of St. Joseph’s Church and its yellow fever martyrs.

The history of education is also one of the area’s defining themes. Rust College was founded in 1866 as a school for formerly enslaved people and is the oldest historically Black college in Mississippi. The McCoy Administration Building stands on its campus and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. It is an example of the college’s historical development. Mississippi Industrial College was founded in 1905 as an educational institution for African Americans. Three of the four important buildings constructed during its growth period from 1905 to 1926 remain standing.

On the Square in Holly Springs, the Marshall County Farmers Market brings together local growers, bakers, and makers. Fresh food and handmade goods are available there.
