Discover Madison: Trails, Water and History
Accommodation in Madison
The Natchez Trace Parkway is designated as a bicycle route. In Ridgeland, the Chisha Foka Multi-Use Trail also runs along the Parkway, offering a recreational trail nearly 10 miles long. Upper Choctaw Boundary offers a shorter, self-guided interpretive walk. From this short, self-guided interpretive walk, hikers can reach the Yockanookany section of the Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail. Upper Choctaw Boundary is designated as a trailhead. The options range from a long recreational trail to a short walk with an interpretive focus.
Trails, Water and Scenery
Ross Barnett Reservoir offers opportunities for stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, wildlife viewing and fishing. Trails for hiking, biking and walking also run along the reservoir. Visitors can access the area via 33 boat launches and two kayak launches. The options include both activities on the water and trails along the reservoir. Which ones suit your stay depends on whether you prefer paddling, fishing, watching wildlife, or getting around on foot or by bike.
Reservoir Overlook offers expansive views of the 33,000-acre Barnett Reservoir and wildlife, including alligators and various waterfowl. Another point of interest in nature is Mississippi Petrified Forest: the National Park Service designated it a Registered National Natural Landmark in 1966. When planning your trip, you can consider scenic views and the history of a significant natural landmark designation as distinct aspects of your visit.
History and Culture in Canton
The Old Madison County Jail is considered one of the most remarkable and best-preserved 19th-century jails in Mississippi. It is also an example of post-Civil War architecture, combining domestic and institutional features. The Canton Courthouse Square District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The Canton Freedom House is the last surviving CORE Freedom House in Mississippi; tours of the Canton Freedom House Civil Rights and Multicultural Museum are available by appointment. If you would like to plan a tour, ask about an appointment in advance.
The permanent exhibit at the Canton Multicultural Center and Museum explores the history, family life, and business and community life of African Americans, and recounts their struggle for civil rights. The Canton Museum of History displays artifacts from shops and businesses, including an antique butter churn and an adding machine from a bank counter. Architectural styles also tell their own story here: Sister Thea Bowman's house was built in the early 20th century. Additions transformed the traditional shotgun house into a single-story bungalow. Scenes from the film A Time to Kill, filmed entirely in Canton, are preserved in the Canton Film Museums.
Festivals and Special Dates
The Canton Flea Market Arts & Crafts Show takes place twice a year, on the second Thursday in May and October, for one day each time. The market attracts more than 1,100 artisans and craftspeople, who display handmade goods such as pottery, jewelry and other arts and crafts at the historic Madison County Courthouse and in the surrounding area. Attendance and participation may vary; check event dates before your trip as well.
The annual Canton Christmas Festival lights up the historic Canton Square with seasonal attractions, photo opportunities and activities for families. The festival also features food trucks and a Santa’s Cookie Stop; vendors and menus may vary. The annual Mississippi Championship Hot Air Balloon Fest in Canton features balloon launches and evening balloon glows. Since event dates and programs may vary, it’s worth checking the dates before making plans.
Keep Opening Hours in Mind
The gallery at the Bill Waller Craft Center is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and the Fourth of July. If the gallery is part of your day’s plans, check the schedule before you go. This lets you account for the set opening days and holiday closures without confusing gallery hours with the festivals’ seasonal dates.
