Otsego offers two themes to explore during your stay: the Mississippi River and the town’s history. At Carrick's Landing Park, a paved loop trail combines time outdoors with direct river views; on the site of present-day Prairie Park, the history dates back to the start of settlement in 1852. Norin Landing is named after an Otsego historian. Whether you want to focus on a loop trail with river views, a kayaking route, or historical connections, these themes give you concrete starting points for planning. If you’re looking for a hotel in Otsego, you can first consider which of these interests you want to shape your stay.

Trails and Water on the Mississippi River

Carrick's Landing Park is located right on the Mississippi River. A one-mile paved loop trail runs through the park; about half a mile of it offers direct river views and access to the water. The combination of a loop, pavement, and a stretch along the river gives you a clear reference point if you want to include a trail with a direct connection to the river in your stay. Note that river views are described for about half the loop—the entire route is not the same as the stretch along the water.

For paddling, the kayak rental program offers an eight-mile route on the Mississippi River. Kayaks are rented at Norin Landing Park and returned at Carrick's Landing Park. The Mississippi River Water Trail also connects the two parks and offers a scenic route for paddling enthusiasts. This gives you distinct park names as rental and return locations for your planning. The contrast with Carrick's Landing Park is clear: there, a one-mile paved loop with about half a mile of direct river views; here, an eight-mile kayak trip on the Mississippi. If you’re choosing between a loop through the park and a paddling route, you can distinguish the options by mode of travel and distance.

Two Historical Perspectives

The site of present-day Prairie Park was first settled in 1852, six years before Minnesota became a state. Pioneers from Maine and other New England states came in search of fertile land and new opportunities. Their origins and motivations add a human context to the start of settlement: behind the date were people looking for land and new opportunities in the area. The six-year gap also places this beginning in the period before Minnesota achieved statehood. This makes it possible to consider the timing, origins, and motivations as interconnected aspects of early settlement.

Norin Landing tells a different facet of local history. The park is named after Elaine Melin Norin (1917–2003), a respected Otsego historian who lived on the family farm on Kadler Avenue. The name thus points to a person and her work in history. Unlike the settlement date associated with the site of present-day Prairie Park, it commemorates a historian and her connection to Otsego. Those who want to view the town’s history from more than one perspective will find both an early chapter of settlement and the remembrance of an individual and her work here.
