Wright County: Lakes, Trails and History
Accommodation in Wright County
Farmland, rivers and lakes shape Wright County in east central Minnesota, near the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The landscape offers several perspectives for planning your trip: public recreation areas, trails and lakes, seasonal winter activities, local history and the Wright County Fair. You can plan your stay around nature and outdoor activities or around culture and events.
Parks, Lakes and Open Landscapes
Wright County’s parks and recreation system includes 32 public recreation areas covering a total of 4,717 acres. It also includes three corridor trails with a combined length of 12 miles. These figures describe different measures: the number and total area of recreation areas, on the one hand, and the length of the three corridor trails, on the other. The 12 miles refer to all three trails combined, not to a single trail.
The area known as Bertram Chain of Lakes encompasses 1,200 acres of open space in Wright County. The Bertram Chain of Lakes property includes four lakes, unspoiled shorelines, natural habitats and oak woodland. Clearwater / Pleasant County Park covers 210 acres between Clearwater Lake and Pleasant Lake. These two landscapes therefore differ both in scale and in location.
The Wright County Parks Environmental Education Center is located at Robert Ney Regional Park. The park provides access to Lake Mary and has a dock there. At Beebe Lake County Park, there is a fishing pier on the south shore. These specific connections to the water complement the larger landscapes with individual places to consider when planning your trip.
Trails and Winter Activities
Cross-country skiing is offered at six different park locations, and fat-tire biking is available in winter at Bertram Chain of Lakes Regional Park. This gives you two different winter activities to choose from: one at several park locations and the other at a specifically named regional park. Both offerings are seasonal, and conditions may vary. If you’re planning your trip around one of these experiences, check the relevant conditions in advance.
Robert Ney Regional Park also offers 5.1 miles of dog-sledding trails. Its 1.3-mile pond loop is illuminated every night, seven days a week, in winter. The winter offerings can therefore be distinguished by activity and trail length: dog-sledding trails on the one hand, and an illuminated pond loop on the other.
History in Wright County
The Wright County Historical Society Heritage Center has 8,000 square feet of exhibition space and includes an interactive, family-friendly history gallery. The Main Gallery also features The Nelsonian, a 32-part one-person band. The center thus offers both an interactive history gallery and a specifically named exhibit. If you’d like to include the region’s history in your trip alongside its landscapes and activities, this is a distinct cultural highlight.
Wright County Fair
At the Wright County Fair, the Carnival Midway features rides, games and prizes; the fair program may change. The fair’s 4-H food stand serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. To help you find your way around the grounds, the Wright County Fairgrounds event map shows entrances, parking areas and restrooms. If you’re planning your stay around a visit to the fair, check the program details in advance; the event map supplements this information with the listed features of the grounds.
