Roseau Between Forest Landscapes and Cultural History
Accommodation in Roseau
Explore Roseau through a range of themes: forest landscapes, regional history, technology, and trails in Hayes Lake State Park. The experiences vary considerably in subject matter and trail layout. This gives you the opportunity to choose what to focus on during your stay and take seasonal events into account when planning.
Landscape and Nature
Lost River State Forest is characterized by flat, swampy terrain. Lowland forests of black spruce and tamarack predominate, while deciduous forests add to the landscape on higher ridges. The forest types are therefore closely linked to the terrain: lowlands and higher ridges support different stands. Those interested in landscapes and forest ecology will find a distinct nature-focused attraction here, alongside the region’s historical and cultural themes.
History and Technology
The Roseau County Historical Society and Museum’s Lake Agassiz exhibit covers the melting of the glaciers, the beaches formed by Lake Agassiz, and the history of Roseau Lake. Fossils from Roseau County and beyond are also on display. Geological changes and the history of a named lake are presented alongside a collection whose finds also extend beyond the county.
Roseau Pioneer Farm and Village includes restored buildings: a one-room schoolhouse, a print shop, a general store, and a church. The buildings offer a different focus from the museum exhibit. Here, the emphasis is on specific historic buildings, including places for teaching, printing, trade, and worship.
The Polaris Experience Center also connects the story of a company with its product development. The 5,600-square-foot center presents the history and development of Polaris. The story spans the second snowmobile built in 1956 to later innovations such as ATVs, side-by-side vehicles, and motorcycles. During regular production, the center offers free factory tours to the public at 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Since the tours depend on regular production, check the schedule before you arrive if the tour is a fixed part of your plans.
Trails in Hayes Lake State Park
The Homestead Trail is a 2.4-mile loop that passes the Hendershot homestead and several burial sites. The Pine Ridge Trail is 2.5 miles long and runs one way. The distances are similar, but the trail layouts differ: a loop and a one-way route are not the same planning measure. When choosing a trail, consider its classification as well as its mileage.
Hayes Lake State Park also has seven miles of horseback riding trails. They run through the park and into Beltrami State Forest. These trails add a dedicated network for horseback riding to the two named trails, so their total length should not be equated with the distances given for the individual trails.
Seasonal Events and Winter Trails
Roseau County has more than 300 miles of marked and groomed snowmobile trails, as well as open routes connecting other communities and state forests. Grooming and trail conditions vary by season. If snowmobiling is part of your travel plans, check conditions for your travel dates.
The Roseau Marketplace takes place every Thursday from June through October in 2026 and features local produce and crafts. Check the specific dates for the season in advance if you’d like to plan your stay around a market day. Roseau County has a long-standing county fair tradition dating back to 1906. Together, the market and fair tradition reflect different aspects of local life: a seasonal weekly event and a historic county tradition.
