At the St. Joseph North Pier stand the historic Inner and Outer Lights and their connecting walkway. The pier is accessible via Tiscornia Beach; the lights and walkway are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This makes the waterfront a natural starting point for exploring St. Joseph, bringing together distinctive landmarks and direct beach access.

Beaches and Pier Access

Tiscornia Beach offers paths, a Lake Michigan beach with swimming access, and access to the North Pier and lighthouses. Silver Beach County Park has a wide beach on Lake Michigan and public access to the South Pier. It is located at the mouth of the St. Joseph River. During the summer months, about 1,600 feet of its shoreline is designated for public swimming. These two waterfront destinations offer different points of reference for planning: paths and North Pier access at Tiscornia Beach, and, at Silver Beach County Park, a wide beach and a seasonal swimming area as well.

Art, Collections and History

The Krasl Art Center exhibits contemporary sculptures in public indoor and outdoor spaces in the city center. The Heritage Museum in St. Joseph brings together regional history, artifacts, archival collections and a research library. The Heritage Museum and Cultural Center promotes historic preservation, education and research related to Benton Harbor, St. Joseph and the surrounding region.

The Silver Beach Amusement Park Museum offers a different perspective on local history: interactive exhibits and memorabilia tell the story of the former amusement park from 1891 to 1971. These dates refer to the historic park. Travelers interested in the region’s development can include collections, research and the history of a former entertainment destination in their plans.

Activities, Parks and Seasonal Events

The Curious Kids’ Museum and the Curious Kids’ Discovery Zone are next to Silver Beach and offer creative, hands-on play and learning for children and adults. The Silver Beach Carousel features 48 hand-carved figures and two chariots. In this same area, visitors can find both hands-on learning activities and a carousel with distinctive, specifically named features.
