Otsego between the lake, state forests, and trails
Accommodation in Otsego
Otsego brings together large areas of forest, a major lake, and trails of varying lengths. If you’re planning a hotel stay, you can start by considering the experiences you want to shape your visit: time by the water, hiking, other activities in the state forests, or seasonal offerings. The landscape and its distinctive features offer several specific ways to plan your trip.
Forest, lake, and river in Otsego County
Otsego County has more than 128,000 acres of state forest—37 percent of its total land area. These areas are open to the public for hiking, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, boating, canoeing, biking, snowshoeing, horseback riding, geocaching, hunting, and fishing. The range of activities spans everything from time on the water to trails through the woods.
The waterways have their own distinctive features: At 1,972 acres, Otsego Lake is the largest lake in the county. The Sturgeon River rises in its central section. This makes the lake and river two distinct parts of the landscape, while the state forests cover a large part of the county.
Trails of varying lengths
The North Central State Trail is 75 miles long, surfaced with crushed limestone, and runs through flat terrain. A section between Gaylord and Vanderbilt is 7.6 miles long; its starting point is the trailhead at the Gaylord Youth Soccer Complex. For a clearly defined outing, this section provides a specific point of reference along the longer trail.
The three-mile Towerman's Watch Pathway offers a different trail experience. This loop winds through tall pines and offers views of the Pigeon River. It is also near several elk-viewing areas. At the site of the former Pigeon River Middle Fire Tower, the route preserves the legacy of fire lookout work: in the past, lookouts watched over the forest. Trail lengths range from the quarter-mile path along the lakeshore to this loop and the 7.6-mile trail section.
Time by the water at Otsego Lake
Otsego Lake State Park offers 62 acres for lakeside recreation. Facilities include a half-mile sandy beach, a designated swimming area, a fishing pier, a quarter-mile path, and a picnic area. The park is easily accessible from I-75. The combination of beach, swimming, fishing, and a short path makes it a distinct option for a day at the lake.
Wah Wah Soo Beach, a free public beach, is on the east shore of Otsego Lake. The Iron Belle Trailhead also offers specific facilities for picnics and outdoor visits: It is free to use year-round and has a pavilion, picnic tables, restrooms, and a gas fire pit.
History, nature, and seasonal experiences
The Louis M. Groen Nature Preserve contains remnants of a former logging camp, including machinery and a sawmill. Call of the Wild / Bavarian Falls Park complements its landscape and nature themes with an interactive Great Lakes exhibit and depictions of wildlife, including elk, bears, and wolves. Together, these places bring different aspects of the region into view: the history of working in the forest and the nature of the Great Lakes.
Local traditions and history also extend beyond individual attractions. In the 1930s or 1940s, Elmira was considered Michigan’s seed potato capital. The Alpenfest Queens Pageant has been part of the Gaylord Alpenfest since 1965. These stories point to different facets of local and festival traditions.
For fall trips, Prusakiewicz Farms offers seasonal activities: hayrides through the fall foliage, children’s activities, fall decorations, and a petting zoo. Availability is seasonal, so plan your visit for the current season’s offerings. At the Otsego County Sportsplex, children and adults can swim in an Olympic-size swimming pool. In winter, visitors can also rent skates there and go skating. Pool and ice rink hours vary, so check the schedule before your visit.
The newest location of Elk View Park offers restrooms, a playground, and a fully accessible viewing platform for elk watching. If you’re traveling with your dog, the Community Dog Park offers space to walk or play.
Whether lakeshores, forest trails, elk watching, or seasonal activities are what draw you: these differences can help you plan a trip around your interests and find a suitable hotel for your stay in Otsego.
