Gaylord offers a range of experiences for a trip: woodland and trail activities, sports at the Otsego County Sportsplex, and destinations in Downtown alongside cultural offerings. For planning, it helps to distinguish the trails by surface, length and intended activity. If you’re looking for hotels in Gaylord, you can first decide whether outdoor activities, sports, or a cultural event will shape your stay.

Woodland Trails and Paths in Gaylord

Wooded Aspen Park covers 100 acres, is open year-round and offers both paved and unpaved trails. Nearly two miles of paved trails are used for biking, hiking and skating in summer. There are also more than six miles of singletrack for mountain biking. Difficulty ranges from beginner to intermediate. The routes therefore differ not only in length, but also in surface, use and difficulty. The year-round opening applies to the park; the activities mentioned on the paved trails are for summer.

The North Central State Trail offers a different scale: it is 73 miles long, has a crushed-limestone surface, and is intended for cyclists, runners and walkers. One section passes through Downtown Gaylord; an extension runs there and along scenic Otsego Lake. Two different features are useful when comparing it with Aspen Park: the woodland park’s various trail types, and the trail’s length and surface.

Sports at the Otsego County Sportsplex

The Otsego County Sportsplex in Gaylord has a wheelchair-accessible, 25-yard swimming pool with six lanes. There is also an NHL-size ice rink, as well as public skating. The two sports areas can be clearly distinguished: in the pool, lane length and number of lanes are key; on the ice, hockey and public skating take center stage. If you include one of these activities in your travel plans, you’ll have a clearly defined sports offering to guide you.

Downtown, Museum and Recreation

Downtown Gaylord is a pedestrian-friendly destination for strolling and shopping. The Call of the Wild Museum in Gaylord features interactive exhibits about animals and history, as well as an interactive exhibit about the Great Lakes. It also includes more than 60 wildlife exhibits, the Wildlife Theater and the Hands-on Learning Center. The museum therefore focuses on several different themes and exhibit formats.

Bavarian Falls Park offers adventure golf, go-karts and Krazy Kars. These options complement the outdoor trails and sports with recreational activities in the park. For planning, you can choose destinations based on whether you’re looking for a route or sports activity, want to explore Downtown on foot, or are interested in exhibits and recreation.

Elk Viewing

Elk View Park is one of Gaylord’s public viewing areas, where visitors can observe a herd of more than 60 elk maintained by the city. An elk viewing area extending Aspen Park has restrooms, a playground and a fully wheelchair-accessible viewing platform. These specific features help distinguish elk-viewing facilities from the trail and sports offerings.

Alpenfest: Tradition and Announced 2027 Edition

Alpenfest is an annual Swiss celebration in Gaylord. The festival continues a tradition that began with Gaylord’s first Alpine Festival on July 5, 1965. Alpenfest includes special activities, an arts and crafts show, numerous rides and food offerings. The 62nd edition is scheduled for July 13–17, 2027, in Alpine Village. If you’re planning your trip around this edition, check the announced dates in advance.
