The Rifle River begins at Devoe Lake within the Rifle River Recreation Area in Ogemaw County. In Ogemaw County, waterfront activities range from paddling and fishing to canoeing, tubing and camping. Forest trails, wildlife encounters and historical attractions also shape the destination, with activities that vary by season.

On the Water and Forest Trails

The Rifle River Recreation Area has an accessible fishing pier at Grebe Lake. There are several boat access points along the Rifle River, as well as carry-in boat launch sites. Paddling is popular on the river and on the park’s many lakes, which are intended for leisurely boating. There are also carry-in boat access points at Ambrose Lake State Forest Campground: on the campground’s northwest shore and at some campsites.

The Ogemaw Hills Pathway is a scenic 15-mile loop through the Au Sable State Forest. All 15 miles are open to mountain biking; during the winter months, the entire route is groomed for cross-country skiing. This means the same trail length accommodates two different uses: a winter cross-country ski route and a loop open to mountain biking along its entire length. The trail has two starting points: one near the intersection of East Clear Lake and North Fairview Road, and one near Sage Lake and Stoney Ridge Road.

Wildlife and Time Outdoors

At Ogemaw Nature Park, children and adults can encounter Michigan white-tailed deer up close. The park’s history began in the 1920s, when it was established as a sanctuary for wild deer. Admission is free. For a break, there is a picnic area with grills and a pavilion.

West Branch Disc Golf Course also combines an activity with a distinctive natural setting: its 18 holes run along Rifle Creek. Those who prefer to plan their own route can explore the Ogemaw County Color Tour, which offers two loops with five different sections to see in total. Another self-guided tour leads to barn art around the county.

Local History and Living Demonstrations

Ogemaw Springs is a historic site that honors the county’s oldest village. The settlement began in 1872 in connection with the Lansing and Saginaw Railroad. The Ogemaw County Historical Museum offers a broader look at the history of the region and its families. Its exhibits include wedding attire, “Buttons and Bows,” a trophy room and a military room; genealogical and historical research resources are also available.

As a living history attraction, Antique Village brings pioneer life in Ogemaw County to life. At Withey School, school desks and teaching materials are part of the exhibit. During festival week, the school offers craft activities for younger children. At the General Store, woodcarvers and other craftspeople demonstrate their crafts during the same week. At Pioneer Encampment, visitors can learn pioneer skills such as cooking, daily chores and axe throwing.

Events and Special Interests

The Ogemaw County Fair takes place every year in August. The program includes rides, fair food, Antique Village and agricultural competitions. Exact dates may vary, so check them if you are planning your stay around festival week. Also held annually in West Branch, the Pioneer Power Antique Tractor and Gas Engine Show is dedicated to historic agricultural machinery. The Antique Snowmobile Festival features displays and demonstrations of antique and historic snowmobiles, as well as rides, races and competitions.

Archers can use the Rifle Creek Archery Park’s indoor and outdoor ranges. The outdoor range is open to the public seasonally; a “Park Pass” is required for the indoor range. The Sunrise Side Wine and Hops Trail offers tastings of locally made wine at Modern Craft Winery and Rose Valley Winery. So, in addition to river and forest activities, Ogemaw County has offerings for travelers interested in regional history, crafts, wine or special events.
