Midland County: Architecture, Nature and Cycling Trails

A National Historic Landmark, eight terraces of dahlias and a paved section of rail trail showcase very different sides of Midland County. Architectural history, gardens, trails and waterfront parks give you specific reasons to plan your trip around your own interests.

Architectural History and Garden Art

The Alden B. Dow Home and Studio is a National Historic Landmark and is considered one of the finest examples of mid-century design. Alden Dow designed and built the architectural studio and residence between 1934 and 1941. The combination of the two functions and the long construction period make the building a special point of interest for architecture enthusiasts.

At Dahlia Hill, plants and art stand side by side: eight terraces feature nearly 3,000 dahlia plants and more than 340 varieties. Dahlia Hill offers educational garden tours and the chance to see original sculptures. Check tour availability before your visit. The adjacent museums also display works by Charles Breed, the founder and artist of the Dahlia Hill Society.

Cycling on the Pere Marquette Rail Trail

The section of the Pere Marquette Rail Trail in Midland County is 18 miles long, paved, flat and scenic. It runs between Dublin Avenue in Midland and Isabella County Line Road in Coleman.

Trail access points are located in Averill, Sanford, North Bradley and Coleman. Modern restrooms, drinking fountains, pavilions and rest shelters are available at the trailheads. These amenities are specific to these access points. Midland County has nearly 100 parks in total, including the Pere Marquette Rail Trail.

Waterfront Parks

Sanford Lake Park is in the village of Sanford and offers beach and waterfront recreation, as well as a boat launch. Veterans Memorial Park is on the edge of the village of Sanford, provides access to the Salt River and features mature pine trees. In the western part of the county, Manitou Park is in Lee Township on the Chippewa River. It offers riverbank fishing and a launch point for canoes and kayaks.

The water-based activities on offer are distinct: Sanford Lake Park focuses on the beach, waterfront recreation and a boat launch, while Manitou Park offers riverbank fishing and a launch for paddlecraft. Veterans Memorial Park adds access to the Salt River to the mix. The best place for your day depends on whether you’re looking for beach and water recreation, fishing, paddling or a park with mature pine trees.

Landscapes and History

Chippewa Nature Center encompasses more than 1,500 acres of wilderness. Laur Big Salt River Park offers a short walk and picnic spots overlooking a small section of the Big Salt River. The region therefore offers both a large natural area and a manageable walk with a specific viewpoint.

River Trails Heritage Park is in an area shaped by the history of the lumber industry and Indigenous history. Following the effects of a recent flood, nature is currently reclaiming the park.

Culture, Markets and Events

Midland Center for the Arts offers live performances, hands-on museum experiences, classes, holiday programs and community programs. The cultural offerings extend beyond exhibitions and stage events: depending on your interests, hands-on experiences and programs for a range of occasions are also available.

The Midland Area Farmers Market brings together farmers, food producers and neighbors. Offerings include fresh produce, baked goods, maple and honey products, cheese, meat, eggs and fish from the Great Lakes. Availability varies by season and vendor. The market is open Wednesdays and Saturdays from May through October, as well as the first three Saturdays in November. Check the specific dates and opening hours before you travel.

The Midland County Agricultural and Horticultural Society offers various events throughout the year, including festivals, RV and bicycle rallies, exhibitions and special community events. The selection may change. The Midland County Fair dates back to 1866: its first event was held that year at the Methodist Church on Main Street.
