In Gratiot County, paved trails, river landscapes, and cultural history come together. The Fred Meijer Heartland Trail connects Alma and Greenville; the Pine River Canoe Trail winds through open fields and floodplain forests. Add to that the landscapes of the Maple River State Game Area and insights into the region’s history and culture. You can plan your trip around whether you’d prefer to travel along a country trail, explore a water route, or get to know local sites and performing arts.

Land and Water Trails

The Fred Meijer Heartland Trail is 42 miles long, paved, and open year-round for non-motorized use. It connects Alma and Greenville in rural central Michigan. Its two named endpoints and the trail’s length provide clear reference points for planning your trip.

The 30-mile Pine River Canoe Trail offers a different perspective, running through the open fields and floodplain forests of Gratiot County. It begins at Lumberjack Park near Madison Road and ends two blocks from downtown Alma. The Pine River is generally a calm stream, though it also has sections with fast currents; water conditions can vary by season. Check local access conditions before paddling.

The two trails are quite different: the Heartland Trail is a paved, year-round route for non-motorized use, while the Pine River is a water route with varying current conditions. These differences can help you choose an outing that fits your trip plans.

Landscapes and Activities

The East Unit of the Maple River State Game Area lies in southern Gratiot County on both sides of US-127. The area’s landscapes include farmland, wooded areas, grassland, and cattail marshes. By comparison, the Pine River Canoe Trail passes through open fields and floodplain forests: these descriptions show different facets of the county’s landscape.

The county parks also offer specific options to help with planning. Paul Hubscher County Park has a designated beach area and a fishing platform. Reed County Park has an 18-hole disc golf course. This makes it easy to include whichever option interests you in your outing plans.

Cultural History and Performing Arts

The Gratiot County Area Historical Museum is housed in a red Victorian brick home built in 1881 and listed on the State Register of Historic Places. Its outdoor areas and outbuildings also offer a glimpse into the past: the barn contains farm equipment and tools, an enclosed single-horse carriage, and an open farm wagon. A restored log cabin on the grounds is furnished to resemble a settler’s first home. The house, barn, and cabin each highlight a different aspect of architectural history, farming, and early home life.

Alma also has venues for the performing arts. The Oscar E. Remick Heritage Center for the Performing Arts opened in 1993 and has three performance spaces. The theater department stages several productions each year in the 200-seat Strosacker Theatre, which has a semi-thrust stage. The Gratiot County Quilt Trail adds to the cultural offerings with 50 quilt squares, each accompanied by a story.

Events and Getting Around

During the Alma Highland Festival, the parade starts at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the intersection of Pine Avenue and Superior Street. It travels west through downtown Alma to the intersection of Charles Avenue and Superior Street. If you’re planning to attend a future festival, check the time and route for that year.

Seasonally, the Alma Artisan and Farmers Market brings local producers and artisans together on Saturdays. It offers food, produce, and handmade goods; check the dates before your visit. To get between destinations, the Alma Transit Center, together with I-Ride, provides a connection between Alma and Mount Pleasant.
