Delta County includes more than 200 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and the cities of Escanaba, Gladstone, and Rapid River. The coast offers opportunities for swimming, paddling, and boating.

Coast, Harbor, and Time on the Water

Fayette Historic State Park lies on Big Bay de Noc on Lake Michigan between Snail Shell Harbor and Sand Bay. Five miles of trails wind around the harbor and offer views from 90-foot-high limestone cliffs. A boat launch in the park provides access to Big Bay de Noc. Kayaks and an 18-foot canoe are available for seasonal rental: from June through September at the contact station, and from October through May at the park office. Check current rental availability and boat launch conditions before your trip.

For boating guests, Escanaba Marina offers fuel, electricity, showers, a harbormaster, loaner bicycles, and visitor information. The availability of these services may change; check ahead if you plan to use them. O.B. Fuller Park is an 82-acre regional site on the shores of the Bark River and Lake Michigan.

Trails, Parks, and Winter Activities

The Days River Nature Trail is a 0.75-mile loop through a diverse floodplain forest near the mouth of the Days River. It features cedar groves and wetlands, as well as views of the Days River. In Ludington Park, a bike path connects the waterfront park and swimming beach with Aronson Island; the park also has an accessible fishing pier.

Winter trips offer their own opportunities: Days River Trail has several winter loops and a groomed trail for skate skiing. Check current trail conditions before setting out. Gladstone Ski Hill offers downhill skiing, snowboarding, and tubing; its terrain park has a halfpipe and snowmaking. Confirm winter operating hours and conditions before your trip.

At Fayette Historic State Park, the Track Chair can be used throughout the park, including the historic townsite. If you plan to use it, check the current reservation process before your visit. This lets you factor its use into your plans without treating tours, trails, and water activities as interchangeable.

Historic Sites and Museums

At Fayette Historic Townsite, visitors can walk through preserved historic buildings and take self-guided or guided tours in summer. Check seasonal tour dates ahead of time. Sand Point Lighthouse has been fully restored and furnished and still has a fourth-order Fresnel lens. It is at the end of Ludington Street, across from Escanaba Municipal Marina.

The exhibits at the Delta County Historical Museum cover the history of logging, shipping, railroads, the military, Indigenous cultures, fishing, and the local economy. U.P. Military Museum offers self-guided tours; its collection includes artifacts from the American Civil War era and afterward. Check the current tour schedule before your visit.

The Webster Marble: Inventing the Outdoors Museum displays hunting knives, axes, automatic fish hooks, the Game Getter rifle, and a Ford Model T. U.P. Steam and Gas Engine Village and Museum offers an interactive learning experience, with demonstrations by local artisans of traditional crafts. These demonstrations may be seasonal, so check the schedule if they are important to your plans.

Farmers Market and Seasonal Events

From June through September, the Gladstone Farmers Market takes place every Monday. It offers locally grown fruits and vegetables, baked goods, and handcrafted items. Summer concerts take place every Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Karas Memorial Band Shell in Ludington Park. The fair at U.P. State Fairgrounds and Heritage Center is held annually in August. Because these offerings are tied to specific dates, it’s worth checking the relevant calendar before your trip.

Plan a trip to Delta County around your own interests: the shoreline and boat launches sit alongside loop trails and winter activities, while museums, historic buildings, and seasonal events offer other possible focal points. Choose a hotel as a base for planning your trip, and check the relevant dates and conditions for activities that are tied to specific times.
