Bay City offers travelers a range of attractions: recreational trails and landscapes, astronomy, and historic buildings. If you’re looking for a hotel, considering which of these themes you want to shape your stay can be a helpful starting point. The places below differ in type and scale—from trails in the municipal park system to individual cultural sites.

Nature and Recreation

Bay City’s municipal park system includes 10 miles of rail trail and Riverwalk, offering residents and visitors opportunities for recreation and leisure. It’s a place to start if you’re planning to spend time outdoors during your trip. One specific location is the Cass Ave. Boat Launch at 620 Harrison St. in Bay City, Michigan. The address provides a precise reference point; park trails and the boat launch cater to different recreational interests.

Bay City State Park sits on the shore of Saginaw Bay and is home to Tobico Marsh, one of the largest remaining freshwater coastal wetlands on the Great Lakes. Its waterfront location and wetland give the park a different character from the municipal trail system. There is a fishing pier and a seasonal floating pier at Tobico Lagoon. If the floating pier is part of your plans, keep in mind that it is seasonal.

Astronomy Downtown

The Delta College Planetarium is located in downtown Bay City. Its Digital Theater features a Digistar fulldome video projection system beneath a tilted dome measuring 50 feet in diameter, with 140 seats all facing the same direction. The dome format is a particular draw if you’re interested in astronomical imagery.

ViewSpace offers a different format: a self-updating multimedia astronomy exhibit that presents astronomical content to the public. While the dome projection takes center stage in the Digital Theater, ViewSpace focuses on an exhibit format with updated content. The two offerings within the planetarium therefore differ in how they present information.

Architectural History and Culture

The Center Avenue Historic District includes more than 250 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places; many are mansions of former lumber barons. The district presents architectural history on a larger scale than a single house. The Bay County Historical Museum is housed in Bay City’s former National Guard armory, built in 1910; the building is listed on the state and national registers of historic places.

The State Theatre of Bay City was built in 1908 and hosts musical performances and films. These examples differ in scale and purpose: a district with more than 250 buildings, a museum in a former armory, and a theater for music and films. If a particular film or music performance is central to your stay, check the event schedule in advance, as programming may vary.
