Bay: Hotels for Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Bay
For a stay in Bay, you can focus on different interests: coastal landscapes and trails, a planetarium, museums, or events. These destinations offer concrete starting points for planning. If a particular date or a river tour is central to your stay, it is worth checking the relevant dates and seasonal schedule in advance.
Coastal Landscapes and Trails in Bay County
Pinconning Park and Campground is located on the shore of Saginaw Bay in northeastern Bay County. The nature preserve covers 206 acres and offers opportunities to observe numerous bird species, including migrating waterfowl. Sightings may vary by season. Three observation towers and two viewing platforms provide different vantage points; there are also five miles of trails and boardwalks, as well as a floating fishing pier. Amenities may change.
Bay City State Park, with Tobico Marsh, preserves a different landscape: the wetland is among the largest remaining freshwater coastal wetlands on the Great Lakes. The Bay County Riverwalk/Railtrail System also connects a variety of landscapes. Along the route, these range from forests and wetlands to river views and ball fields. The system runs through Bay City as well as residential and agricultural areas of Portsmouth, Hampton, and Bangor Townships.
The Riverwalk/Railtrail System has dozens of access points with parking, facilities, and clear signage to help visitors find their way. Since trail alignments, facilities, or signage may change, check current information if these details matter for your tour. As another geographic reference point, the Nayanquing Point State Wildlife Area is in Bay County on the western shore of Saginaw Bay on Lake Huron, three miles north of Linwood, Michigan.
Planetarium, Museum, and Maritime History
The Delta College Planetarium is located in downtown Bay City. Since opening in 1997, it has welcomed more than 650,000 visitors. Its digital planetarium theater uses a Digistar full-dome projection system beneath a tilted 50-foot dome, with 140 unidirectional seats. Alongside the landscapes, technology and science are also options to consider during your stay.
The Bay County Historical Museum is housed in Bay City's former National Guard Armory, built in 1910. The building is listed on the state and national historic registers. Its two permanent exhibits, “Bay County: Trails Through Time” and “Bay City: Seaport to the World,” explore Bay County's heritage and Bay City's development into a prosperous international port. The museum is also an official location for the “Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame” exhibit area. Exhibit topics and layouts may change.
Another maritime attraction is the USS EDSON (DD 946): the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum brought the ship to the Bay County waterfront as a unique attraction. Bay City Boat Lines operates from Wenonah Park in downtown Bay City and is known for its river tours. Schedules are seasonal and may change; check the latest information if a tour is important to your trip.
Plan Travel Dates Around Events
The Bay County Fair is held annually in early August at the fairgrounds. The Bay County Fair & Youth Exposition is dedicated to showcasing the county's agriculture. If you want to plan your trip around this event, take its annual timing into account and check the event dates as you make your plans. In this respect, the fair and river tours differ from the landscapes and museum topics described above: they depend on specific dates or seasonal schedules.
Natural areas and trails appeal to different interests than the planetarium, exhibits, or an event date. If you want to plan a river tour, factor its seasonal schedule into your choice of dates. For the fair, the annual date in early August is a good starting point.
