St Charles: Mississippi History, Wetlands and Culture
Accommodation in St Charles
The Bonnet Carré Spillway was built in 1928 as a controlled outlet for Mississippi River floodwaters and first opened in 1937. Along the German Coast, the landscape slopes down from the Mississippi River toward Lake Pontchartrain; near the lake, flat swamp gradually gives way to marshland. The river’s history and the landscape shape two distinct sides of the region.
Experience the Wetlands
Swamp Adventures offers airboat rides through cypress swamps inhabited by wildlife. Wetland Watchers Park has boardwalks over the swamp and a pavilion for outdoor learning. Check current park conditions before your visit. The Bonnet Carré Spillway Trail is an easy, 5-mile route suitable for families who want to experience Louisiana’s natural landscape. The three offerings each focus on something different: a ride through cypress swamps, outdoor learning and a bike ride.
Plantation and Church History
Destrehan Plantation was built in 1787 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A guided tour covers its distinctive architecture, historical documents, and the lives of the Destrehan family and the enslaved people who worked the plantation. It also visits an original slave cabin. Check the current tour schedule before your visit.
On January 13, 1811, a tribunal was convened at Destrehan Plantation to determine the guilt of those who had surrendered or been captured and decide their punishment. Ormond Plantation House remains recognizable as a large, two-story Creole plantation house. The two sites offer different perspectives on the region’s architecture and history.
The cemetery at St. Charles Borromeo Church contains graves dating back to the 18th century, including the Destrehan Family Tomb. Ascension Plaza, at the cemetery entrance, is a permanent structure dedicated to preserving history. The Little Red Church served for many years as a landmark for Mississippi River steamboat pilots.
Planning with Nearby Landmarks
The St. Charles Parish Library Planetarium is 20 miles west of New Orleans on US 90. Destrehan Plantation is 10 minutes from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport and 25 minutes from the French Quarter. You can factor in these reference points when planning visits to the area’s natural and cultural sites.
