Mammoth Cave is the world’s longest known cave system; 412 miles have been surveyed to date. Mammoth Cave National Park covers about 52,830 acres in Edmonson, Hart and Barren counties in Kentucky. The park offers ranger-led cave tours. The surveyed length may change as exploration continues.

Onyx Cave also offers its own perspective on the world of caves: visitors can see a large amount of cave coral, as well as formations such as “cave bacon” and columns. For road directions, Onyx Cave is located right off I-65 at Exit 53.
At Diamond Caverns, guided tours follow a half-mile loop and last 60 minutes. Diamond Caverns is open year-round. Admission is on a first-come, first-served basis; reservations are not accepted. Trails, Forest and Lakeside Recreation
Brigadoon State Nature Preserve is a 187-acre protected area in Barren County, next to Barren River Lake. A moderately challenging hiking trail passes over ridges, through old-growth forest and along scenic ravines. The one-mile route includes both forest stretches and varied terrain.
At Barren River Lake State Resort Park, the Bike & Hiking Trail is a paved 2.5-mile loop. The park also has public boat ramps: facilities are located at the campground, among other places; another ramp with a service dock is next to the marina. There is also an 18-hole golf course. This offers different ways to enjoy an active day, with a loop trail, boat ramps and golf all available.
History and Culture of The Barrens
The South Central Kentucky Cultural Center preserves the history and culture of “The Barrens” for future generations. Its collections include artifacts, works of art, publications, archival materials and a genealogical library. The range spans objects and art as well as written and genealogical collections.
Fort Williams adds a specific historical landmark: the Union Army built the fort in 1863. It has been preserved and is one of the few remaining earthen forts from the American Civil War in Kentucky. In the region, you can encounter both a broad collection documenting the culture of The Barrens and a particular preserved structure with a clear historical context.
Performances and Seasonal Produce
The Plaza Theatre opened around early 1934 and presents live performances by national, regional and local artists. Since individual events can change, check the current schedule if you’re planning a visit.
The Bounty of the Barrens Farmers Market offers seasonal fruits and vegetables, dairy products, eggs, honey, baked goods, meat and handmade products. Market dates and vendors can change, so check the current schedule in advance. Together with the caves, trails and cultural attractions, this makes for a trip where you can choose to focus on nature, history, performances or local products.
