Flint Hills Uplands, Glaciated Region, and Osage Cuestas are the three physiographic regions of Wabaunsee County. The county is also associated with the Flint Hills and Native Stone Scenic Byways. For route planning, the east-west stretch of the Native Stone Scenic Byway is described especially specifically: it runs through Eskridge, Alma, and Wabaunsee. These three named places provide concrete orientation for the east-west stretch.

Scenic Byways and Nature

Mount Mitchell Heritage Prairie Park lies along the Native Stone Scenic Byway, in the endangered tallgrass prairie of the Kansas Flint Hills. The visitor experience connects the tallgrass prairie and the culture of the Flint Hills with the history of the nation’s ongoing struggle for freedom. Here, landscape and history come together, without requiring you to plan around different themes separately.

At Echo Cliff Park, the 50-foot cliffs and Mission Creek flowing along their base create another striking natural feature. The park is open from sunrise to sunset. Camping after dark is possible if campers notify the Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office. Keep this requirement in mind when planning a stay that extends beyond daytime hours.

Lakes and Outdoor Activities

At Lake Wabaunsee, you can fish, go boating, water-ski, and sail, as well as canoe, kayak, and watch birds. Camping options include RV sites and tent camping; restrooms, water, and picnic areas are also available. The amenities combine on-the-water activities with practical facilities for a lakeside stay.

At Alma City Lake, fishing, kayaking, and canoeing are also available, along with family picnics. If you want to distinguish between the lakes based on the activities specifically mentioned, Lake Wabaunsee additionally offers boating, water-skiing, sailing, and birdwatching, as well as camping. Alma City Lake, by contrast, is also noted as a place for a family picnic. These differences can help you decide what to focus on for an outing, without assuming that both lakes offer the same activities.

History, Art, and Visiting Hours

The county’s history is reflected in places and events from different eras. The Santa Fe Trail once ran through Wilmington in the southeastern part of Wabaunsee County. From July 1944 to December 1945, Camp Number Five, which housed German prisoners of war, was located at Lake Wabaunsee. Completed in 1931, the Wabaunsee County Courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These sites range from a historic route to a building and a place associated with World War II.

The Beecher Bible and Rifle Church also connects history with visitor offerings today. It was dedicated in May 1862 and holds Sunday services at 9:00 a.m.; everyone is welcome. Homecoming is still celebrated on the last Sunday in August. Event details can change, so check them before your trip if you want to plan your visit around the date.

The Volland Foundation hosts art exhibitions and community programs in its gallery; outdoor performances take place at “the Ruin.” The Volland History, Nature, and Sculpture Trail and the M.T. Liggett Sculpture Park are open daily from sunrise to sunset. A prior appointment is required to visit Ag Heritage Park, where museums and exhibits offer insights into historic agricultural life.

The Wabaunsee County Historical Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and closed on Sundays, Mondays, and holidays. Since hours can change, check the schedule before your visit. To choose the focus of your trip, you can weigh routes, water activities, history, and art against one another; this can also help you tailor your hotel search to the themes that matter most to you.
