Smith County: History and Landscape
Accommodation in Smith County
Smith County brings together Kansas history and a landscape of open spaces, rolling hills, and wooded creek bottoms. Historic buildings, a monument at the geographic center of the contiguous United States, and trails through nature offer different starting points for your trip. Some outdoor activities require the consent of the landowners involved.
Historic Buildings and Remembrances
The Dutch Mill was built in 1883. Until 1920, it processed corn, graham, and wheat flour; in 1938, the mill was moved to its current location. Its construction date, use, and relocation mark different periods in its history: they offer a glimpse into earlier flour milling and show that the building has not always stood in the same place.
The Smith County Historical Museum in Smith Center comprises four buildings and an extensive collection of artifacts from the county’s early history. The Athol Community Hall, meanwhile, has a basketball court on its ground floor with its original four-layer maple floor. The hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 21, 2025. The two places convey different aspects of local history: a collection spread across several buildings and a distinctive interior in a historic hall.
The Home on the Range Cabin also has a specific historical connection: it was built in 1875 and was the home of Dr. Brewster Higley. The visitor site includes a creek and walking trails; since trail conditions can change, it is a good idea to check the latest conditions before your visit. The song “Home on the Range” was declared the official state song of Kansas on June 30, 1947.
The Historic Homes Walking Tour in Smith Center includes 15 historic homes. Those interested in a place’s architectural history will find a different way to explore it than at the museum: here, the focus is on individual historic homes.
Landscape and Outdoor Activities
Smith County features open spaces, striking sunsets, rolling hills with farmland and pastureland, and numerous wooded creek bottoms. The Solomon River runs through the county’s southwestern corner. The landscape ranges from agricultural land to wooded areas along the creeks.
The landscape features described also include accessible hunting areas and fishing ponds. Hiking, hunting, and fishing in the rolling hills and wooded bottoms are possible with the consent of the landowners involved. Wildlife includes deer and turkeys; elk are seen occasionally. If you are interested in wildlife or landscapes, this part of the county offers a different focus from the historic buildings and memorial sites.
The Home on the Range Cabin visitor site includes walking trails. Wagner Park also offers a place for picnics and has playground equipment. Smith Center Municipal Golf Course is 4.3 miles south of Smith Center on Highway 281. These examples represent different activities; check current conditions when visiting, especially for trails and local services.
Memorial Sites and Directions
A permanent monument in Lebanon marks the geographic center of the contiguous United States. It was unveiled on June 29, 1941. The site is one mile north of Lebanon, Kansas, and one mile west on Highway 191. These distances provide specific directions to the monument.
The marker at the Battle of Beaver Creek site is west of Smith Center on K-36. After turning onto Road M, it is about three-quarters of a mile south on the west side of the road, on a small rise. The directions specify both the road and the marker’s location on the site. Another landmark is Smith Center Municipal Golf Course, 4.3 miles south of Smith Center on Highway 281.
