Nature, Mennonite culture, and regional history offer different perspectives on Harvey County. These include a trail for hiking, running, and horseback riding; a living prairie exhibit; historic buildings; and events featuring music or Mennonite cuisine. This means your trip can focus on anything from outdoor activity to cultural history.

Nature and Activities at East Park

The Osage Nature Trail at East Park is suitable for hiking, running, and horseback riding. East Park also has a fenced beach area for swimming with pets, with direct access to the water. Visitors who want to include both an activity on the trail and time by the water in their stay will find two different options here. The beach area is specifically described as a swimming area for pets.

Mennonite History and Prairie

The permanent exhibit “Of Land and People” at the Kauffman Museum tells the story of Mennonite migration from Europe to the Central Plains. Another topic there is Tallgrass Prairie Restoration: the living exhibit covers 1.5 acres and includes more than 15 grass species and over 100 wildflower species. Together, the two exhibits offer a look at cultural history and prairie vegetation. The size and variety of species make the living exhibit a tangible complement to the historical subject.

The Kansas Learning Center for Health also focuses on historical topics. Its exhibits cover Dr. Hertzler, Halstead Hospital, and the Halstead School for Nursing. The Kellas School adds another historic school building: the restored one-room schoolhouse dates from 1873. These examples offer different perspectives, from medical history to school life in a one-room schoolhouse.

Depots, Buildings, and Historic Trails

In Halstead, the Santa Fe Depot is a single-story brick building dating from 1917. Today, the historic depot houses the Carriage Factory Art Gallery. The Warkentin Farm in Halstead is significant for its agricultural advances and German-Russian ethnic heritage. Together, these sites represent different aspects of local history in Halstead: railroad architecture, use as an art venue, and agricultural heritage.

In Newton, two other historic entries should be distinguished. Newton Main Street Historic District I is a late Victorian-style commercial district that was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 15, 2003. The Santa Fe Depot in Newton was added to the Register on April 11, 1985; its architecture is classified as Tudor Revival, and its significance is linked to the railroad.

The history of the Abilene-Chisholm Trail can also be traced through different locations. The historic trail ran along the east bank of the Little Arkansas to Sedgwick, then along both sides of Sand Creek to Newton. A branch crosses the Bethel College campus, where there is a trail marker. Three branches cross the grounds of the Kauffman Museum; a swale and a marker are located there. These details describe historic trail routes and markers, not a present-day hiking route along the entire trail.

Events and Travel Planning

Mennonite cuisine is offered at the Bethel College Fall Festival. The Prairie Window Concert Series combines American roots music with gourmet cuisine in a prairie garden setting. Both offerings pair culture with food, but have different focuses: cuisine at one, and music and a garden atmosphere at the other. If an event is the reason for your trip, check its date in advance.

Visitor offerings in Harvey County include parks, attractions, and dining and shopping options. When planning, consider whether you would rather focus your time on nature, exhibits and historic buildings, or an event. This lets you prioritize the topics that interest you without combining the different places and offerings into a single itinerary.
