When planning a trip to Pella, you can include a city festival held on fixed dates, cultural and historical sites, and a longer outdoor route. Visiting arrangements vary by attraction and should be factored into your travel plans.

Tulip Time and Festival Days

Tulip Time in Pella always takes place on the first Thursday, Friday and Saturday in May. There are two parades each day of the festival. This makes the specific dates more important for planning your trip than the month alone. Check the current dates and program before traveling, as the annual schedule and event program may change.

Buildings, Museums and Pella’s History

The Pella Opera House is located in the heart of downtown and was Pella’s first four-story building. Free self-guided tours of the building are offered to individuals Monday through Saturday. As times and availability may change, check before your visit.

The Pella Historical Village is a complex of 18 buildings that spans Pella’s history from the 1840s onward. The focus is therefore on a collection of buildings, not just one house. The difference from the Pella Opera House lies in the scale: here, the historical setting extends across several buildings, while the Opera House focuses on a single building.

The Klokkenspel adds a different storytelling format to these sites. Its eight mechanical figures are each four feet tall and depict people and moments from Pella’s history. History is presented not only through historic buildings, but also through depictions of individuals and events.

The Vermeer Windmill was rebuilt in Pella in 2002. This date represents a different historical reference from the history dating back to the 1840s at the Pella Historical Village: the windmill is associated with a specific year of reconstruction, while the Village covers a longer historical period. These different time frames can be considered side by side without treating the dates as equivalent.

The East Amsterdam School Museum, also known as the Amsterdam School, contains historical school memorabilia. It has been set up as an interactive museum since 1972, focusing on a school day in the 1930s. Visits are by appointment only, so arrange this part of your itinerary in advance.

Park and Trail

Sunken Garden Park features a sunken pond shaped like a wooden shoe. This detail provides a landscaped accent alongside Pella’s historic buildings and museum exhibits: the focus here is on the distinctive design of a park pond. If you don’t want to focus solely on cultural history, the park offers a different perspective.

The 17-mile paved Volksweg Trail currently connects the trailhead at the Pella Public Library with the Howell Station Campground and is being extended. This distinguishes the trail from the individual cultural sites: its length, the stated endpoints and its current development status are important planning details. Check the current route in advance if you plan to include the trail in your trip.

For your travel dates, there are different details to check: for Tulip Time, the festival days and program; for the Opera House, the tour options; and for the East Amsterdam School Museum, the advance appointment. Confirm these arrangements against your planned stay before deciding on other activities and your hotel.
