In Cordova Park, cliffs overlook Lake Red Rock. The area covers 1,100 acres; its observation tower is 106 feet tall and can be reached by climbing 169 steps. The number of steps gives you a concrete point of reference if you want to factor the climb into your visit plans.

Lake Red Rock and the Parks

Lake Red Rock encompasses more than 13,000 acres of water and 35,000 acres of land available to visitors. The lake offers opportunities for camping, boating, and fishing. For a trip on foot or by bike, there is access to a paved, 13-mile hiking and biking trail. This gives you different ways to spend time by the water and in the landscape.

The parks also vary in size and focus. Roberts Creek Park covers 1,535 acres, with extensive areas of woodland and grassland. Two modern campgrounds are located on the east and west sides of 300-acre Roberts Creek Lake. Marion County Park is a 140-acre recreational area and the oldest recreational area managed by the County Conservation Board. It includes a seven-acre fishing lake with largemouth bass, sunfish, and catfish.

The Marion County Conservation Department manages nine parks, trails, and wildlife areas in the county, covering a total of around 3,412 acres. Elk Rock State Park has two boat ramps providing access to Lake Red Rock. It is named after an unusual rock formation near the south side of the river. These details give an impression of the range of landscapes and activities, from fishing at a small lake to boat access and longer trails.

Birdwatching Along the River

Horns Ferry Bridge is exclusively for pedestrians. In the area around Horns Ferry Bridge, you can watch bald eagles seasonally; they often roost at the Gladys Black Bald Eagle Refuge. Seasonal wildlife watching here goes hand in hand with information about the importance of the Des Moines River corridor and the history of the bridge. The area also includes the “Winged Expressions” bird sculpture.

For this visit, the bridge itself is an important part of getting your bearings: it is for pedestrians only, and eagle watching is a possibility, not a guaranteed encounter.

History and Motorsports

The Marion County Historical Village opened to the public in 1970. Today, it comprises eight buildings and offers a glimpse into life in the early years of Iowa and Marion County. The history associated with the Stage Coach Inn goes back further: it is said to have been built in 1852 and was located along the route of the Western Stage Line. This apparently connected Knoxville with Monroe, Pella, Oskaloosa, Albia, and Fairfield.

Sprint car racing is another cultural focus. The National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum is dedicated to this history. On average, it displays 30 to 35 open-wheel race cars; the vehicles and exhibits on display change throughout the year. The changing collection is one aspect of a museum visit: the number of vehicles is an average, not a permanently unchanged display.

Pella: Architecture, History, and Pastries

In Pella, the city’s history is intertwined with architecture and Dutch specialties. Pella Historical’s Historical Village comprises 18 buildings and covers Pella’s history from the 1840s onward; it also includes the Boyhood Home of Wyatt Earp. Hendrik Scholte had the Scholte House built for his wife, Maria, in 1847 and 1848. A narrated tour aboard the Pella Trolley covers the city’s history, architecture, Dutch traditions, and major landmarks.

Individual structures also make a striking impression: the Vermeer Windmill is 124 feet and 6 inches tall and is considered the tallest working windmill in North America. The Klokkenspel features eight mechanical figures, each four feet tall, depicting people and moments from Pella’s history. For a tasty break, Jaarsma Bakery has been serving Dutch specialties since 1898. Dutch Letters are flaky, S-shaped pastries filled with almond paste and topped with sugar.

These highlights can help you choose a hotel location that fits your planned itinerary.
