A trail along Buffalo Creek follows the water and passes through wetlands; at the Wapsipinicon River, Pinicon Ridge Park is characterized by hilly, densely wooded terrain. Linn’s natural areas showcase a variety of landscapes. The Linn County Conservation Board manages more than 30 areas totaling over 8,000 acres. These include parks, preserves, natural areas, and linear parks.

Parks Along Creeks and Rivers

The 128-acre Buffalo Creek Park is in northeastern Linn County, along Buffalo Creek. Its flat, 1.2-mile gravel trail runs along the water and through wetlands. The park provides habitat for wild turkeys, deer, nesting Canada geese, beavers, and foxes. The park also has a kayak launch. Buffalo Creek thus combines a trail through different natural areas with a kayak access point.

Morgan Creek Park covers 352 acres in the Morgan Creek valley, just west of the Cedar Rapids city limits in Linn County. More than four miles of trails are available for year-round use. Along the Wapsipinicon River is 1,018-acre Pinicon Ridge Park, where hilly, densely wooded terrain and diverse wildlife create a different landscape. During the summer months, the park’s Watercraft Concession rents kayaks, canoes, pedal boats, and paddleboards. Seasonal operations depend on weather and staffing.

Trails for Different Activities

Wanatee Park offers several options: a four-mile trail is suitable for hiking, horseback riding, wildlife watching, running, and cross-country skiing. The trail network also includes six miles of mountain biking trails and a skills park. The park is named after Adeline Wanatee (1910–1996), an artist and advocate for the rights of Indigenous people and women. In 1993, she was inducted into the Iowa Women’s Hall of Fame. The name thus honors a figure whose work encompassed both art and civil rights.

The Cedar Valley Nature Trail is 68 miles long, including the section from Cedar Rapids to the Johnson County line. In spring, summer, and fall, the trail can be used for walking, running, cycling, and inline skating. Along with the trails at Morgan Creek and Wanatee, it offers a different scale of distance and a selection of activities described by season. The trails at Morgan Creek Park are available year-round; Wanatee Park offers horseback riding and cross-country skiing in addition to hiking.
