Buena Vista County: Lake, History and Culture
Accommodation in Buena Vista County
Buena Vista County offers a variety of reasons to stay: in Storm Lake, the lakeshore and outdoor activities take center stage, while historical collections, buildings, and events provide other highlights. If you’re looking for a hotel for your trip, you can plan your stay around nature, cultural history, or a specific event.
Storm Lake: Lakeside Trail, Fishing, and Art
Storm Lake is a natural lake spanning 3,200 acres. The Lake Trail runs from Frank Starr Park in the west to Sunset Park in the east, mostly along the lakeshore. The trail is lit at night, and parking is available alongside it. The two parks mark the endpoints of the lakeside route described here.
The lake is stocked annually with walleye; channel catfish, white bass, largemouth bass, and crappie are also caught there. Fishing regulations apply. These fish species give anglers specific ideas for planning their stay.
The Storm Lake Lighthouse Project is a public art installation: lighthouses made of molded fiberglass stand in parks and public places around Storm Lake. A lighthouse at Awaysis Beach on the lakeshore can be climbed and offers views and photo opportunities. When weather conditions permit, the Parks Department also grooms a cross-country ski trail through the area of Sunrise Pointe Golf Course and Sunrise Pointe Campground.
The county’s natural attractions extend beyond the lake: the Buena Vista County Conservation Board manages 17 areas spanning more than 1,200 acres in total. These include parks, wildlife areas, historic sites, and natural areas.
Collections and Historic Sites
The Buena Vista County Historical Society Museum is located in a historic building where Model T vehicles were once assembled. The museum includes a walk-through Main Street attraction, a pioneer barn, a rare collection of artifacts from the prehistoric Mill Creek culture, and a genealogical library. Its different sections bring together everyday history, collections, and family research.
Santa’s Castle is housed in Storm Lake’s historic Carnegie Library, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The exhibit’s story began in 1962 with the purchase of four animated elves. It grew into one of the world’s largest and most valuable exhibits of antique animated Christmas figures.
The Allee Mansion is a “living museum” with interactive demonstrations. Guides dressed in Victorian clothing explain life at the turn of the century; the experience is seasonal. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. The Newell Historical Society has been working to restore and preserve it for more than 30 years.
The Hanover Historical Village features a restored country store, an old-fashioned barbershop, a two-story machinery barn, a historic home, a working mill house, and a barn with agricultural exhibits. The annual Hanover Festival brings together polka and old-time music, demonstrations, games, and a petting zoo. Check the current event date before you arrive.
Another recurring event is the Albert City Threshermen & Collectors Show, held annually on the second full weekend in August. Check the specific dates for the year before your trip. Visits to the Harker House follow a regular tour schedule; check the schedule before you arrive. The house preserves 95 percent of the original family furnishings belonging to the family that built it.
