In Grundy County, outing options range from trails for various activities to nature and recreation areas, as well as historic sites and artistic designs. If you’re looking for a hotel in Grundy County, you can plan your trip around these interests: Which trails and permitted uses suit your itinerary, and which other places would you like to visit? Trail lengths, usage rules and cultural themes vary considerably.

Trails, Routes and Usage Rules

The Pioneer Trail connects Holland, Grundy Center, Morrison and Reinbeck along a 12-mile route. Activities listed there include hiking, running, cycling and cross-country skiing. The trail’s former use is also part of its history: it follows a formerly active railroad line that served four communities.

The Comet Trail offers a 1.25-mile path for walking and cycling around Conrad, then continues for another 6 miles through Beaman to Wolf Creek Park. A 60-foot suspension bridge connects the Wolf Creek Recreation Area with the Comet Trail; the trail continues toward Beaman, Conrad and Gladbrook. The routes described thus differ in length, the places they reach and this bridge connection.

When planning how to use the Pioneer Trail, it’s important to distinguish between the trail and the parallel path: horseback riding is allowed on a mowed grass path that runs alongside the trail. Motorized vehicles and all hunting are prohibited on the trail. So if you plan to ride a horse, the permitted option is the parallel grass path, not the trail itself.

Nature and Recreation Destinations

The Wolf Creek Recreation Area is a 93-acre multi-purpose recreation area featuring Bur Oak forests and reconstructed prairie. It also has a six-hole disc golf course. The connection to the Comet Trail via the 60-foot suspension bridge adds a specific trail link to its natural and scenic features.

Grundy County Lake covers 40 acres. The lake offers beach and boat access, camping, a fishing pier, a paved boat ramp, a picnic area, a playground, restrooms and trails. This includes a range of activities and ways to spend time there, from access to the water to picnicking. The information about the lake can be considered a separate part of your trip planning, apart from the trail descriptions for the Pioneer and Comet Trails.

Another activity is the Grundy Center Archery Range. It is open from May through December, weather permitting; a permit is required to use the range. If you plan this activity, be sure to consider the seasonal schedule and the required permit.

History and Artistic Designs

The Grundy County Courthouse in Grundy Center was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. Barn quilt tours offer another way to explore local history: visitors can follow a self-guided tour through rural areas and several communities. Along the way, they’ll encounter dozens of colorful quilt patterns. The large patchwork designs are painted on the sides of barns and other agricultural buildings in two counties.

The barn quilt project in Grundy County began in the fall of 2003. Its goal was to bring visitors from the newly completed Route 20 at the time into the heart of the county. The project’s history explains the initiative’s original purpose, while the self-guided tours today offer a way to discover the designs in rural areas and several communities.

In Dike, the Heimann Saw Shop and Museum displays a chainsaw collection assembled by Mark Heimann. Along with the courthouse and barn quilt designs, this collection expands the range of cultural and historical topics you can consider when planning a stay in Grundy County.
