History and Architecture
At Swiss Heritage Village, qualified guides lead visitors through original buildings that were relocated to the site. The Village spans 26 acres. The tours offer a tangible way to experience the historic buildings: you see them not just as individual structures, but as part of the grounds.

The Charles Dugan Mansion in Decatur was originally built in 1902. In February 1968, the Adams County Historical Society acquired the former mansion at an auction. The house at 420 W. Monroe St. in Decatur was intended to serve as the society’s headquarters and a museum.
The Geneva Downtown Historic District preserves the character of a late 19th-century commercial center. The Geneva Downtown Commercial Historic District includes 22 contributing buildings. Limberlost Park is home to the historic Ceylon Covered Bridge, built in 1879. In Berne, Muensterberg Plaza and Clock Tower is home to the only Swiss cantonal tree in the United States. The Peace Monument offers a different theme: it is the world’s first monument dedicated exclusively to peace.
Seasonal Experiences and Nature
Every fall, Swiss Heritage Village hosts a Heritage Festival. The festival features live demonstrations, interactive exhibits, historical reenactments, and games and activities for children. Dates and programming may change, so check the event dates before planning your trip around the festival.
Literature and landscape are also connected: Limberlost Swamp inspired Gene Stratton-Porter’s articles, prose works and photographs. Self-guided walks are available in the natural areas of Limberlost Conservation Area from sunrise to sunset. Access and trail conditions may change, so it’s a good idea to check both before your visit.

Hanna Nuttman Park is the last remaining remnant of the original forest in the Decatur area.
