Indiana County: Nature, Trails, and History
Accommodation in Indiana County
Indiana County in Pennsylvania can be explored through a range of highlights: forest and water landscapes, routes for recreation and commuting, and places connected with industrial and regional history. If you’re looking for a hotel, these interests can help you decide what you’d like to focus on during your stay.
Water, Forest, and Natural Areas
Yellow Creek State Park covers 2,981 acres and includes a 720-acre lake used by boaters and anglers. Yellow Creek Lake and the state park are an important stopover for migratory birds. The park is open daily year-round from sunrise to sunset. Its programs include guided outdoor and hands-on activities, outdoor education, and special events for all ages.
Buttermilk Falls Natural Area combines a 45-foot waterfall with a scenic forest landscape. The area was designated to protect typical and unique plant and animal communities. There is an overlook at the waterfall; visitor facilities also include a hiking trail, a small picnic pavilion, a restroom, and a parking area. Buttermilk Falls in Indiana County is also a stop on the Fred Rogers Trail, a regional driving tour with ten stops.
Trails and Water Activities
The Ghost Town Trail is 54 miles long in total and runs through Indiana County and Cambria County. The U.S. Department of the Interior designated it a National Recreation Trail. The trail explores the history of the rise and decline of the coal and iron industries, as well as nature’s return to the corridor. The 10-mile Hoodlebug Trail is a recreational and commuter route between Black Lick and Indiana. E-bikes are permitted on its section in Indiana County, subject to the regulations in effect there. Comparing their lengths highlights two trail options of different distances.
The Waterworks Conservation Area has a launch site for canoes and kayaks, as well as access for fishing on Two Lick Creek. A paddling trip from there to near Saylor Park covers a little over 12 river miles and includes a portage. Check water levels and downstream hazards before your trip. The West Penn Rail Trail also offers a direct connection to a historic site: it passes through the Tunnelview Historic Site and runs between Saltsburg and the trailhead on Newport Road near Blairsville.
At Yellow Creek, the lake and park are complemented by bird habitat and an outdoor activities program. The Waterworks Conservation Area, by contrast, focuses on access to Two Lick Creek. These different highlights can help you decide which activities you’d like to shape your trip.

The Jimmy Stewart Museum features two galleries devoted to different periods of Stewart’s life. The Indiana Gallery covers the history of his hometown, his early ancestors, his childhood, and his education through Princeton University. The Hollywood Gallery traces his film career through more than 80 films from 1935 to 1991.
The UGRR History Center is located in Blairsville in the former Second Baptist Church. Built in 1917, the building is considered the oldest African American church in Blairsville. The center is open year-round in the evenings and on weekends, as well as by appointment. The Silas M. Clark House, built in 1869 and 1870, offers tours by appointment only. Eliza Furnace is listed on the National Register and is considered one of Pennsylvania’s best-preserved iron furnaces.
The first-floor exhibits at the Armory cover Indiana County’s history from its beginnings to the present day. On the second floor, military history exhibits explore various conflicts, from the French and Indiana War to the more recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. In Smicksburg, you can explore more than 20 specialty shops selling country crafts, quilts, furniture, antiques, and food.
Agriculture also shapes the region’s identity: Indiana County is known as the “Christmas Tree Capital of the World” and grows various evergreen tree species for the Christmas season.
