In Whiteside County, you can explore nature and history at specific places: Morrison-Rockwood State Park is located north of Morrison, and the Whiteside County Fair is also held in Morrison. Water, landscape and engineering structures shape other destinations featured here.

Nature and Waterways

Morrison-Rockwood State Park covers 1,164 acres. Lake Carlton, a reservoir created in 1969, lies within the park. A 38-foot-high and 1,800-foot-long earthen embankment was built across a stream, creating the lake. These details add another perspective to a visit: Lake Carlton is not simply a natural body of water, but part of a landscape also shaped by a specific structure.

The relationship between water and landscape takes a different form at Prophetstown State Park. It lies on the south bank of the Rock River; Coon Creek flows through the park and empties into the river. The Wa-bo-kie-shiek Nature Trail follows the edge of Coon Creek for approximately one-third of a mile. This short, explicitly approximate distance is easy to compare with the long trails along the Hennepin Canal: here, a single stretch of creek is the focus, while there is an extensive network of towpaths.

The entire Hennepin Canal is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. More than 100 miles of scenic towpaths run along the canal. Parking areas along the canal offer the opportunity to switch to a bicycle or go hiking. The Hennepin Canal Visitor Center is also located directly on the towpath. Its offerings include museum exhibits, models of a lock system and an aqueduct, as well as preserved Illinois wildlife species. Check the center’s hours before your trip.

The Andresen Nature Center offers a different focus: it showcases native wildlife, insects and plants from the Upper Mississippi River watershed. Visits are available by schedule or appointment. This is a different way to engage with the landscape than following a waterside trail: the center focuses on the flora and fauna of an entire watershed.

History and Cultural Insights

The apartment is known as the Ronald Reagan Birthplace and was designated a National Historic Site in 2002. The exhibits bring together photographs, memorabilia and interpretive displays about Ronald Reagan’s childhood and family life. This shifts the focus beyond one individual to include the family setting and the time in which his childhood took place.

Heritage Canyon offers a different way to experience history: the reconstructed 19th-century village is located in a restored 12-acre quarry on the Mississippi River. At special events, the Early American Crafters and other historical groups demonstrate pioneer crafts. These demonstrations are therefore part of special events, not a program guaranteed to be available at all times.

De Immigrant, a 100-foot-tall Dutch windmill, stands in Fulton. It was built in the Netherlands and reconstructed on a levee above the Mississippi River. Tours explain the construction and repair of the windmill, as well as the milling process. The Windmill Cultural Center’s collection includes more than 20 European model windmills from ten European countries. An interpretive painting in Fulton also depicts the former Fulton-Lyons Toll Bridge, which motorists could use to cross the Mississippi River.

A Visit with a Set Date

The Whiteside County Fair in Morrison combines agriculture, food, exhibits and family-friendly entertainment with traditional harness racing. The race is considered a longstanding tradition and draws spectators every year. Since the annual dates vary, check the fair dates if you want to plan your visit around it. This lets you combine event planning with the nature and history themes that interest you most.
