Nature and railroad history are two notable highlights of trips to McHenry County. The 48-acre Lake Defiance is a largely undeveloped glacial lake; more than 200 bird species have been recorded at Moraine Hills State Park. The area also offers riverbanks, prairie, and trails, as well as a large collection of historic railroad equipment and buildings with local history. You can plan your stay around a variety of interests.

Lakes, River, and Birdlife

At McHenry Dam State Park, visitors have access to the Fox River. There is also a fishing pier accessible to visitors with disabilities. The park's concession stand offers refreshments, fishing gear, and boat rentals for the Fox River and Lake Defiance. This gives you several ways to enjoy the water, from fishing to renting a boat.

Glacial Park spans 3,400 acres and includes prairie, savanna, wetlands, and rolling hills. A series of glacial kames shapes the landscape. Along the shore is a 490-acre designated nature preserve that provides habitat for birds such as Canada warblers, great blue herons, herons, kingfishers, and swallows. Nippersink Creek flows through Glacial Park and is suited to leisurely paddling through prairie and wetlands and past kames. Kayaking also offers views of the landscape and opportunities to observe wildlife.

A scenic driving route in McHenry County combines hiking in Glacial Park, kayaking on Nippersink Creek, and biking on the Prairie Trail. This is one way to bring different activities together in your trip plans. In winter, Glacial Park offers snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling on nine miles of trails, and sledding as seasonal activities.

Trails by Distance and Landscape

Coral Woods is a 407-acre park with more than two miles of multi-use trails. Marengo Ridge has more than five miles of hiking and cross-country ski trails through coniferous and deciduous forests and natural prairie. For a general sense of distance, the parks differ in their stated trail lengths and uses. Trail details at Coral Woods may change; seasonal trail conditions at Marengo Ridge may vary. The 3.5-mile H.U.M. Trail is a bike and hiking path between Marengo and Union.

Railroads and Regional History

The Illinois Railway Museum in Union has the largest collection of historic railroad equipment in America. Its campus spans 100 acres and includes more than twenty buildings. The Model Railroad Exhibit features three operating model railroad layouts and another layout under construction. On operating days, general admission includes unlimited train rides and access to all public areas. On special-fare days, an assigned train time may apply.

The McHenry County Historical Society and Museum campus includes the 1843 Gannon Log Cabin and Perkins Hall, an 1885 town hall. The Historical Society also offers workshops, classes, satellite exhibits, and programs for school and other groups. In Ringwood, the Powers-Walker House is a timber-frame house built in 1854 in the Greek Revival style. It was designated a Historic Landmark on February 3, 2015.

Woodstock Square is home to the Old McHenry County Courthouse and the Old Sheriff's House and Jail, collectively known as the Old Courthouse Center. The buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Woodstock Opera House presents professional theater, dance, music concerts, and art exhibitions year-round. These sites complement railroad history with historic buildings and performing arts.

Getting There and Choosing a Hotel Location
