Dekalb Between History and Nature
Accommodation in Dekalb
When planning a stay in Dekalb, you can make cultural history and nature experiences different focuses of your trip. Historic homes, an Egyptian-style theater, and trails through protected areas offer specific ideas for your visit. Whether you’re more interested in architecture, performance venues, birdwatching, or landscapes, each destination has its own distinctive appeal.
History, Architecture, and Stages
Ellwood House was built in 1879 for barbed-wire entrepreneur Isaac Ellwood. Museum tours introduce visitors to a Victorian mansion with original furnishings, art, and architecture. The Patience Ellwood Towle Visitor Center includes four exhibition galleries; admission is free. Since admission policies can change, it’s a good idea to check the details before your visit.
The DeKalb Egyptian Theatre is one of seven surviving theaters of this Egyptian style in the United States and the only one east of the Rocky Mountains. Its history also includes live performances by Lawrence Welk, B. B. King, Jay Leno, Ray Charles, and The Second City. These names refer to past performances, not a current program. Performing arts take place at the Sandwich Opera House, a historic venue with 300 seats; it originally opened in 1878.
The guided tours offered by the DeKalb County History Center provide further insights into the county’s history. They share information about the architecture and history of notable homes. The reconstructed 1845 Miller-Elwood log cabin also tells the story of early settlement: it was moved to Hoppe Heritage Farmstead and is considered an important account of the earliest settlers of DeKalb County. The Pick Museum of Anthropology complements these cultural attractions with exhibitions, object-based learning, and public programs for the campus and community. As a teaching museum, it focuses on learning through objects.
Trails, Protected Areas, and Landscapes
The Great Western Trail begins at Sycamore Forest Preserve and runs four miles through DeKalb County, then another 14 miles in Kane County. The Great Western Trail Extension connects the trail to the city of Sycamore and the parks and trails of the Sycamore Park District. This offers two different reference points for planning: the trail route through DeKalb and Kane counties, and the connection toward Sycamore.
For birdwatching, Afton Forest Preserve offers a specific point of interest: more than 250 bird species have been observed there since 2004. At MacQueen, the Great Kishwaukee Falls shape the landscape. Here, the river plunges through an erosion fissure in the limestone bedrock. A pedestrian bridge at MacQueen connects the protected area to Potawatomi Woods Forest Preserve.
South Branch Prairie encompasses five native plant communities and is considered a particularly high-quality wetland restoration. It is also part of the Genoa to Kingston Trail. When planning your trip, you can therefore take different nature-related interests into account: birdwatching in Afton, the river and limestone formation at MacQueen, or the plant communities of the prairie.
A Stay with the Right Focus
Shabbona Lake State Park may also be worth considering in your plans. It’s easy to reach from the Chicago area via I-88; check road conditions before setting out. The main building at Shabbona Lake has a 60-seat restaurant and an outdoor patio with another 40 seats and a view of the lake. Before you arrive, check whether the restaurant and patio will be open on your travel dates.
Glidden Homestead is open on Sundays from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. Since these opening hours are listed for 2026, check them again before your visit. When choosing a hotel in Dekalb, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: would you prefer to visit historic homes and museums, or center your trip on protected areas and trails? For a specific property, check how its location fits with the destinations you plan to visit.
