The Savanna Museum & Cultural Center features a working HO-scale model railroad depicting railroad operations in Savanna in the 1950s. It offers a vivid introduction to what Carroll County has to offer visitors: riverfront nature, regional history, and a variety of ways to enjoy the outdoors.

The Mississippi and Nature Experiences

Mississippi Palisades State Park is located near the confluence of the Mississippi and Apple rivers and covers 2,500 acres. The park is rich in Native American history, and fishing is possible in the Mississippi and its backwaters. Sentinel Nature Preserve is located within the park in Carroll County.

Thomson Causeway Recreation Area offers 131 campsites with concrete pads and 50-amp electrical hookups. The Hidden Slough Nature Trail follows a three-quarter-mile route through bottomland forest. There is access to the Great River Bike Trail near the park entrance. A boat ramp provides access to the main channel and backwaters of the Mississippi.

The Ingersoll Wetlands Learning Center in Thomson also offers ways to learn about nature, including a ten-minute orientation video about the refuge, a River Walk exhibit, nature and wildlife exhibits, and maps and brochures. Check the center’s office hours before your visit.

Museums, Historic Sites, and Theater

Permanent exhibits are located on the second and third floors of the Savanna Museum & Cultural Center. Exhibits include more than 120 mannequins depicting the history of the American Civil War, as well as the working HO-scale model railroad. Those who want to explore Savanna on foot can follow the Savanna Historic Walking Tour, with ten historic stops along a route of about 2.3 miles.

The Carroll County Courthouse is located in downtown Mount Carroll. The historic courthouse dates to 1843, and the surrounding streets are paved with bricks. Mount Carroll also has a Historic District listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Carroll County Historical Society operates six historic buildings and preserves a diverse collection on local and American history. Its programs include school tours, living history experiences, public events, exhibits, and publications.

Oakville Settlement includes a brick, one-room schoolhouse dating to 1888, two 19th-century log cabins, a blacksmith shop, and a grain elevator. Timber Lake Playhouse was founded in 1961 as a professional, nonprofit summer theater. Its current building has a 45-foot-wide half-thrust rotating stage and 371 fixed seats.

The route lengths offer a concrete comparison for planning: the Savanna Historic Walking Tour covers about 2.3 miles and has ten stops; the Hidden Slough Nature Trail is a three-quarter-mile walk through bottomland forest. This lets you compare a historic route with several stops and a shorter trail through a specific landscape.
