Rockdale combines railroad history and monastic culture with gardens, trails, and seasonal events. In Conyers, the Olde Town Conyers PATH Trail runs 1.7 miles from the Nancy Guinn Library to Rockdale Career Academy. The third phase runs from the library through Olde Town Conyers to Pine Log Park. A self-guided public art tour in Conyers features murals, painted fire hydrants, fountains, and sculptures. You can consider a route with named endpoints and a tour featuring works of art as distinct focal points when planning your day.

Trails, Gardens, and Outdoor Activities

The Big Haynes Creek Nature Center covers 173 acres of wetlands, forests, and open meadows. Its pollinator garden spans 5,000 square feet and is certified both as a Monarch Waystation and a National Wildlife Habitat. More than five miles of trails are designated for hikers, horseback riders, and mountain bikers. The Rockdale County Master Gardeners’ Memorial Arboretum has a one-mile public trail for walking and horseback riding. South Rockdale Park offers 5.5 miles of mountain bike trails for beginner, intermediate, and advanced riders. When planning, you can distinguish between a single, clearly measured walking and horseback riding route, a longer trail network, and designated mountain bike trails.

The Lewis-Vaughn Botanical Garden features a fountain and a stream with goldfish and pond plants. The stream is fed by Conyers’ original water tower. The Randy Poynter Lake in Black Shoals Park offers a different kind of activity: it is suitable for fishing, boating, and canoeing. So options range from garden scenery and trails to activities on the water.

Monastic Culture and Railroad History

The Monastic Heritage Center at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit is a 17,000-square-foot complex of new and renovated historic monastic buildings. A Prayer Walk leads to the Abbey Church. At the Abbey Store, the monastery offers monk-made fruitcakes, fudge, biscotti, and cookies to sample and buy; the availability of individual products may change.

The Milstead 104 “Dinky” is a Rogers steam locomotive dating from 1905 and one of only three locomotives of its kind remaining in the world. It once ran on a 3.5-mile railroad line between Conyers and Milstead. The Haralson Mill Covered Bridge was built in 1997 as a covered wooden bridge to replace a historic ford in North Rockdale County. The Old Jail Museum presents the history of Conyers and Rockdale County. If you plan to visit the museum, check current visitor information in advance.

Events Throughout the Year

The Walk of Heroes Veterans War Memorial hosts ceremonies every year on Memorial Day and Veterans Day. The Olde Town Fall Festival has welcomed artists and craftspeople for more than 40 years and is part of the fall tradition. The Conyers Cherry Blossom Festival takes place annually over two days in March at the Georgia International Horse Park. Olde Town Conyers also hosts recurring evening events on the second Saturday of April, May, and June from 6 to 10 p.m. Dates and programs for seasonal events may vary; check them before planning your trip.

Your reason for traveling can help determine your hotel choice: for a festival or memorial ceremony, dates shape your plans, while trails, gardens, and historical themes offer different focal points. Choose a hotel location based on the destinations that are central to your stay.
