Lakes, rivers, and a layered county history shape travel ideas for Monroe. In Monroe County, lakes, water-supply reservoirs, campgrounds, picnic areas, and hiking trails are among the recreational options. High Falls State Park is a striking destination on the water; historic sites and museums offer a different perspective on the county’s history.

Water and Trails at High Falls State Park

High Falls State Park is named for the Towaliga River’s cascading waterfalls. A hiking trail follows the riverbank through rolling woodland to the remains of a hydroelectric plant foundation. The route thus connects the river landscape with a tangible example of earlier power generation. To access the lake, the park offers boat rentals, boat ramps, and fishing piers.

Lake Juliette offers a different waterside landscape: its shore is surrounded by the Rum Creek Wildlife Management Area and borders the Rum Creek MARSH project, a protected area for wintering waterfowl. The Wildlife Management Area covers 5,800 acres in Monroe County and offers hunting opportunities for deer, turkeys, small game, doves, waterfowl, and coyotes. This makes both waterfowl watching and hunting distinct nature-related activities here.

Lake Juliette is designated exclusively for fishing; boats with motors over 25 horsepower are prohibited. Dames Ferry is the only campground on the 3,600-acre lake, and many campsites offer views of the water. If you plan to go boating, check the current regulations beforehand. The contrast between the fishing-focused lake and the varied activities at High Falls State Park can help you choose what to prioritize during your time outdoors.

Plantation History and Historic Collections

The Jarrell Plantation State Historic Site dates back to 1847 and preserves authentic 19th- and early 20th-century plantation buildings. The preserved agricultural complex includes steam-powered machinery: a sawmill, a cotton gin, a gristmill, a shingle mill, a planer, a cane press, and a syrup evaporator. The range of equipment shows how different stages of work came together on an agricultural property.

The historic sites in Forsyth also offer a concrete look at county history. The Monroe County-Forsyth War Memorial honors Monroe County residents who served their country; a World War I monument bears thirteen names. Forsyth’s Confederate Cemetery is the resting place of 300 soldiers who died in Forsyth during the American Civil War, and each grave is marked with a marble stone. The Forsyth Commercial Historic District encompasses eight blocks around the 1896 courthouse, with 61 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Monroe County History Museum presents the county’s history through exhibits and special exhibitions. Objects on display include a type case used by Joel Chandler Harris, the writer of the Uncle Remus stories, local historical artifacts, and a cotton gin similar to Eli Whitney’s. The Tift College Legacy Exhibit preserves the history of the college, its graduates, and its impact on Monroe County and beyond. It also offers glimpses of life during different periods in the college’s history.

Telling Our Story is Forsyth and Monroe County’s first Black history museum and was founded in 2008. Together with the History Museum’s exhibits and the Tift College Legacy Exhibit, it broadens the perspective on history to include different institutions, communities, and periods of life. The Monroe County Historical Society preserves and shares the county’s 200-year history through programs, archives, and its museum.
