Valdosta: History, Theater and Recreation
Accommodation in Valdosta
In Valdosta, historic sites, theater, art and recreational activities offer different themes to consider when planning your trip. When looking for a hotel in Valdosta, it helps to first narrow down the purpose of your visit: Would you like to explore local history and collections, plan to see a seasonal performance, or focus on outdoor activities?
Culture and History in Valdosta
The Valdosta Historic District encompasses about 150 city blocks and contains a large share of Valdosta’s historic resources. The district was established in 1981. Its size points to an extensive historic area rather than a single building. To explore historic buildings and landmarks, Visit Valdosta offers self-guided driving and walking tours called Steps Through Time. This lets you choose between a drive and a walking tour when planning your visit.
The Crescent offers a specific architectural detail: the complex has 13 columns, each representing one of the original 13 colonies. The Crescent was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The district and the columns thus illustrate two different ways to view the city’s history.
Museum, Art and Stage
The Lowndes County Historical Society Museum focuses on the history of Lowndes County. Its 10,000 square feet of exhibits feature photographs, documents and artifacts. The museum is housed in a former Carnegie library building constructed in 1913. Admission is free; the museum is open to the public Tuesday through Thursday, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Check the hours before you arrive.
At the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts, two galleries house permanent exhibits of African artifacts and fine antique European porcelain. The Center also has a state-of-the-art kitchen for cooking classes. At Georgia Beer Co., tours explain how ingredients from South Georgia—including pecans, peaches, blueberries, watermelons and honey—shape the beer.
If you’re interested in the performing arts, Peach State Summer Theatre presents three musicals in rotating repertory in Valdosta during a ten-week summer season. This differs from a single performance: the three musicals rotate throughout the season. For your trip planning, this seasonal timeframe is an important point of reference.
Outdoor Recreation and Events
Freedom Park covers more than 250 acres. Its large sports complex has 12 regulation adult softball fields. The park also includes an inclusive Miracle Field, an accessible playground and an adjacent pavilion designed for people with different abilities. There is also a paved loop trail and a 20-basket disc golf course. Field sports, disc golf and the walking trail offer different kinds of recreation.
The 27th Valdosta-Lowndes Azalea Festival is planned for March 13 and 14, 2027. It is planned as an entirely outdoor event. More than 250 arts and crafts vendors from several states are expected; the announced program also includes a large food area, six performance areas, a classic car and motorcycle show, and an expanded KidZone. Unlike the ten-week summer theater season, the festival is scheduled for two specific days. Before traveling for this event, check the announced dates and program details again.
