Lowndes: Wetlands, Parks and Local History
Accommodation in Lowndes
Discover Lowndes through a range of interests: wetlands, river access, parks, historic buildings and art shape the experiences on offer. In Valdosta, Wild Adventures and the Georgia Grown Trail are also notable points of interest for planning your trip.
Wetlands, Rivers and Trails
The Grand Bay Wildlife Management Area covers 2,623 acres of state-owned land. At the Grand Bay Wetland Education Center, visitors can learn more about wetland habitats. Both the landscape and its interpretation take center stage here: you can combine a visit with an interest in wetlands without having to plan a particular kind of outing.
River access is also part of the region’s appeal. On the west side of Lowndes County, the Knights Ferry Boat Ramp provides access to the Withlacoochee River via Knight's Ferry Road. The Troupville Boat Ramp provides access to the Little River on the border between Lowndes and Brooks Counties. These two access points are on different rivers and in different locations; choose the one that fits your plans.
Lake Park’s landscape is shaped by its many lakes and hiking trails. Those looking to include outdoor recreation in their trip will find a different focus here than at exhibitions or historic buildings. You can weigh the local offerings against the other interests you have for your trip.
Parks and Events
Hahira has seven parks within its city limits. The facilities mentioned include playground equipment, picnic benches, playing fields and green spaces, as well as a boardwalk and a skate park. This range offers different kinds of recreation, from spending time outdoors to playing and skating. The parks provide a reason in their own right to consider Hahira when planning a trip with varied interests for each day.
Events also shape what Hahira’s downtown has to offer: a variety of special, family-friendly events take place there throughout the year, and specific dates may vary. In Lake Park, the annual Christmas Tour, held on the second weekend in December, features local businesses and homes. If you’d like to attend one of these events, check the dates before planning your trip.
Wild Adventures in Valdosta covers 170 acres and includes habitats for hundreds of exotic animals. Festivals and events include examples such as Kidzpalooza and Phobia; specific event dates may change. The park thus offers its own kind of experience alongside the range of nature, culture and recreation that Lowndes has to offer.
Architecture, History and Art
Hahira’s downtown retains most of its original architecture. Visitors interested in historic townscapes and buildings can combine this with a visit to the city parks. Hahira’s first Honey Bee Festival took place in 1982—a historical detail that adds to the town’s event history without making any claims about whether the festival takes place today.
The Crescent was built in 1898. Its circular veranda has 13 columns, representing the original American colonies. The property also includes test gardens, an octagonal schoolhouse and a chapel. The Crescent is home to Valdosta’s garden clubs and hosts special events throughout the year; the program may change. Architecture, garden design and events come together at this location.
Two museums with different areas of focus offer further insights into history. The Lake Park Area Historical Society Museum is housed in a building constructed in 1890. The Lowndes County Historical Society and Museum offers nearly 10,000 square feet of exhibits and research materials on local history. Those who would rather focus on art than regional history can find works by visual artists in six separate galleries at the Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts. Tours are available there by appointment.
Plan Your Trip
Valdosta is in southern Georgia on Interstate 75 and makes a good starting point for exploring the Georgia Grown Trail along Highway 41. When planning your hotel stay, consider these regional landmarks alongside the specific experiences that interest you most: wetlands and river access, trails and parks, or history and art. This way, choosing a suitable destination starts with the focus of your trip, rather than assuming that particular accommodations are close to specific attractions.
