Jackson County offers a range of ways to shape your trip: historic sites and buildings, nature experiences by the water, and recreational and sporting activities. Several of these themes come together at Hurricane Shoals Park. Museums and historic buildings shape the sightseeing in Jefferson and Commerce; outdoor activities include trails, sports courses and a disc golf course.

Nature and History at Hurricane Shoals Park

Heritage Village at Hurricane Shoals Park features historic buildings that were rescued and relocated there. The Hurricane Shoals Nature Trail offers a different perspective on the area, revealing the rugged beauty of the North Oconee River along a route approximately two miles long. Historic buildings and a longer nature trail can therefore serve as distinct focal points for your stay.

The grist mill also tells the story of the park. It was rebuilt in the 1980s, is fully operational today, and grinds cornmeal for the Art in the Park Festival. If you are interested in water activities, tubing in the rapids is permitted in the park. The park notes that playing and swimming are at your own risk.

The Tumbling Waters Society sponsors the annual Art in the Park Festival at the park, as well as the 5K Millrace, held on the third weekend in September. It is worth checking the dates before your trip when planning your schedule. In addition to its trails and historic buildings, the park offers a seasonal event that can help you time your visit.

Museums and Architectural History in Jefferson and Commerce

The Crawford W. Long Museum commemorates Dr. Long’s discovery of the use of ether as an anesthetic on March 30, 1842. The museum includes the Pendergrass General Store in Jefferson: the dry-goods store opened in 1858 and is the only surviving pre-Civil War commercial building in the city. A visit connects the story of a medical milestone with a glimpse into Jefferson’s commercial history.

The Jackson County Courthouse in Jefferson was built in 1879 with neoclassical elements. The Welcome Center is located in the restored Jackson County Historic Courthouse. In Commerce, take a look at the historic downtown district: its tree-lined streets are easy to explore on foot, and the district includes shops, craft breweries and local restaurants. The Commerce Commercial Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and contains more than 100 commercial buildings from the Italianate period.

Cultural offerings also have a range of different focuses. The Commerce Cultural Center, formerly the Historic Presbyterian Church, hosts theatrical performances, concerts, festivals and stage events. At the Jefferson Community Theatre, community members can participate in theater in various ways: as actors, backstage crew or audience members.

Agricultural Heritage and Outdoor Activities

Shields-Ethridge Heritage Farm is an agricultural open-air museum as well as an educational and interpretive facility in northeast Georgia. Its collection of intact historic buildings remains at the original sites; the buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. At Sell’s Mill Park, by contrast, natural and engineering features by the water take center stage: visitors can see rapids, a water wheel and a millrace area, and hike the trails.

Crow’s Lake focuses on family fishing and other outdoor agritourism activities. Its 1K, 5K and 10K cross-country courses are open for running and cycling events. The three distances give you a specific range of options when planning a running or cycling event, without implying any particular level of difficulty. There are also horseback riding trails and an 18-hole disc golf course.

Wine, Wellness, Golf and Motorsports

Chateau Elan Winery offers a tasting featuring six pours of its signature wines, including sparkling wines, reserve wines and limited releases. The Spa at Chateau Elan offers personalized massages, revitalizing skincare, body rituals and couples’ treatments. Chateau Elan Golf Club has 45 holes across the Woodlands Course, Chateau Course and Executive Par 3. These offerings provide a distinct focus alongside nature, local history and activities at the parks.

A regional motorsports attraction is Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta in Hall County. The operator reports more than 20 events and over 400,000 visitors each year; these figures may change. If you want to plan your trip around a motorsports event, check the relevant dates in advance.

This helps tailor your search to your travel plans; it is best to check festival and event dates before making plans.
