Decatur County can be explored through two distinct themes: nature at Silver Lake and cultural history in Bainbridge. These offer different starting points for planning your trip. In the southern part of the county is the 9,200-acre Silver Lake Wildlife Management Area. Silver Lake Public Fishing Area offers nature trails through pine flatwoods characterized by longleaf pines and wiregrass. If you enjoy exploring on foot, you’ll find a specific landscape to focus on here; the forest types shape the character of the trails.

Nature and Water

Activities at Earle May Boat Basin center on the Flint River: the facility includes a boat access point to the Flint River and large boat ramps. Amenities also include paved, lighted walking trails, a pump track, and a fitness area. A swimming beach, campground, disc golf course, and playgrounds round out the offerings. The activities are varied: alongside access to the river, there are opportunities for exercise on trails and open areas, as well as options for playing and camping.

The Flint River runs through Bainbridge, making it a prominent point of reference when visiting the city. Cheney Griffen Park is located on the riverbank. The railroad bridge is part of the scenic backdrop there, which is also noted as a draw for photographers. Willis Park offers a different perspective in downtown: a Victorian gazebo and a fountain stand in the heart of Bainbridge. The riverbank, bridge, and park are different landmarks to use as reference points during a stay in Bainbridge.

For practical orientation, Downtown Station has public restrooms. The highway intersection in Bainbridge is another specific landmark: U.S. Highway 84 and U.S. Highway 27 meet there. These details can help you get a general sense of the city without specifying a particular route or travel time.

Architecture and History in Bainbridge

The Decatur County Historic Courthouse was built in 1902. The courtroom features tall windows, a gallery, woodwork, and four fireplaces. The date places the building in its historical context, while the details give the interior its own architectural character. The Decatur County History Museum preserves a collection of historical memorabilia in downtown Bainbridge, adding a collection—not just a single building—to the story of local history.

The Firehouse Arts Center building also reflects its former uses: it once served as City Hall and a firehouse and was designed by William Augustus Edwards in 1914. It is considered the only example of Mission architecture in this part of the state. Another trace of the region’s history is the double-hangar complex from World War II at Decatur County Airport. It was built in 1943 as part of Bainbridge Army Airfield.

The self-guided Bainbridge Heritage Tour takes visitors to 41 historic buildings and homes. Among the historic homes listed is the Donalson-Rollins House, built in 1898. St. John's Episcopal Church is considered the oldest continuously used church building in the country. These examples illustrate different forms of heritage: homes and churches, as well as public and military architecture.

Oak City Cemetery was established in 1853. In 1878, its western section was transferred to Temple Beth-El, creating one of the first Jewish cemeteries in south Georgia. The two dates show how the cemetery developed as part of local and regional history. Performances offer another way to experience the culture: Bainbridge Little Theatre stages four productions each year. If you’d like to plan a visit to a performance, check the specific show dates.
