Coweta: Riverbanks, Hiking Trails, and History
Accommodation in Coweta
Coweta brings together outdoor experiences along the Chattahoochee, regional history, and offerings focused on gardening and food. Coweta County lies just south of Atlanta, with Chattahoochee Bend State Park in the northwestern part of the county. These diverse themes come together here: riverbanks and hiking trails, exhibits and historical interpretation, as well as activities related to gardening and food. Which side of Coweta defines your visit depends on whether you want to focus on outdoor experiences, Newnan’s culture, or farm-related activities.
Landscape, River, and Outdoor Activities
Chattahoochee Bend State Park covers 2,910 acres and protects five miles of the Chattahoochee River’s shoreline. Nearly 15 miles of hiking trails complement the river setting with an extensive trail network. The day-use area also has a boat ramp providing access to the river. Hiking and access to the water are two different ways to experience the park.
A different scale can be found at Canongate Nature Preserve, an 18.5-acre nature preserve in Coweta County. Comparing its size with the state park highlights the difference between an expansive park and a smaller preserve. Cycling is another of Coweta’s outdoor activities: the county is an important part of the Chattahoochee Valley Cycling experience. At the Hunter Complex, a professionally designed 18-hole disc golf course adds to the sports offerings.
Newnan: Transportation and History
The City of Newnan operates a free trolley service that is open to everyone. The trolley connects visitors with downtown Newnan and Ashley Park. If you plan to visit both destinations, check current operating details before you travel.
The exhibits at the McRitchie-Hollis Museum tell stories from Newnan and Coweta’s past. Brown’s Mill Battlefield Historic Site explains the battle through personal accounts and military history information on interpretive panels. The ChildrenConnect Museum features interactive exhibits where children learn through active play. It is housed in the former Male Academy Classroom building; the Male Academy Classroom was founded in 1840.
Farm Experiences and Special Activities
Country Gardens Farm regularly offers gardening, cooking, and food preservation classes and workshops. The current class schedule lists offerings for 2026. If you want to plan around a specific class, check the dates in advance. At 180-Degree Farm, offerings include a public market, a flower garden, and a nature trail, bringing market, garden, and nature experiences together in one place.
Pickin’ on the Square brings acoustic musicians together for an open jam session on the courthouse lawn. Check the event dates when planning your visit. Georgia Tours offers the chance to explore iconic filming locations from the series The Walking Dead in a town known as Woodbury. Check the current operating status of this offering before making plans.
