Nature and Activities at General Coffee State Park
At the Heritage Farm in General Coffee State Park, Georgia’s agricultural history is presented through log cabins, a corn crib, a tobacco barn, a cane mill, and other exhibits. Visitors can usually see goats, sheep, chickens, and pigs in the park; which animals are visible may vary by season.
The park also features a range of habitats: the Seventeen-Mile River and a boardwalk pass through a cypress swamp where rare and endangered plants grow. The wiregrass habitat provides a home for pitcher plants, indigo snakes, and gopher tortoises. The swamp and wiregrass landscape thus offer two distinct nature experiences.
There are 13.4 miles of horseback riding trails. Check trail access and fees before riding. Bicycling is permitted on all paved areas of the park and on more than four miles of hiking and nature trails. You can paddle on the four-acre Farm Pond; visitors can fish at a four-acre lake.
The Trading Post, also known as the Park Office, rents two-person canoes for $5 per hour and two-person kayaks for $10 per hour. Pedal boats cost $15 per hour for two people and $20 for four. Rental availability and prices may change; check both before making plans.
Trails and Landscapes
Broxton Rocks features sandstone outcrops, blackwater streams along Rocky Creek, longleaf pine-wiregrass forests, and seepage bogs with pitcher plants. A waterfall, rock ledges, cave-like crevices, and cliffs up to 30 feet high add to the scenery. The Jeannie Wright Trail at Broxton Rocks starts at the kiosk on Rock Road.
Keep in mind that the trail at Broxton Rocks is not stroller-friendly and is not ADA-accessible; there are no restrooms in the preserve. In Douglas, the free Douglas Greenway Trail offers a different experience: the 2.5-mile paved trail runs through the city along a former route of the Georgia-Florida Railroad. Its length and surface are clearly specified, while at Broxton Rocks, visitors should pay particular attention to information about trail conditions and facilities.
The Ocmulgee River runs through Coffee County, where fishing, paddling, and wildlife watching are possible. In northern Coffee County, Wiley Hammock is an ATV park covering more than 700 acres, with long trails, a sandbar, and four constructed mud pits on the banks of the Ocmulgee River. Details of this recreational offering may change.
