Grady County lies in the lower coastal plain of southwest Georgia; at the same time, the terrain is hilly and shaped by numerous small waterways. Fertile soils are also part of the landscape. Nature, local history, golf and a recurring December event offer different starting points for planning a trip. If you’re staying at a hotel in Grady, these themes can help you tailor your trip to your interests.

Nature and Landscapes in Grady

Birdsong Nature Center is located partly in Grady County and covers 565 acres. Its landscapes include wildflower meadows, old fields, pine and hardwood forests, ponds and swamps. The range extends from fields and forests to wetlands.

Wolf Creek Trout Lily Preserve is a 140-acre nature preserve owned by Grady County. It protects tens of millions of yellow trout lilies mottled with maroon, as well as thousands of maroon-mottled trillium plants. Hiking options in the preserve include the Upper Trail (yellow/right).

Tired Creek Lake and the Ochlockonee River Water Trail

Tired Creek Lake, a 960-acre reservoir, is located in Cairo. The lake is stocked with various fish species, including bass, crappie and bream. There are trails around the lake. This means that a body of water, fish stocking and trails come together at the same named location.

The Ochlockonee River Water Trail currently has three developed access points in Thomas and Grady Counties. This highlights the different ways water features in Grady: Tired Creek Lake focuses on the lake and trails, while the Water Trail has access points in two counties.

History, Architecture and Culture

The Cairoga Club Building, now home to the Grady County History Museum, was built in 1920. The Zebulon Theater is a historic Art Deco-style theater, offering another cultural point of interest in the region.

The history of syrup is also visible in Cairo: the former syrup mill has been renovated and is now the Grady Cultural Center. It offers spaces for meetings and banquets, as well as room for performances, exhibitions and special events. There are also opportunities for creative expression and exchange.

Cane syrup is among the foods produced locally in Grady County. In 1889, Roddenbery marketed the first pure Georgia cane syrup under the name “Roddenbery’s Old Plantation Molasses.” Local production and this history of the product connect the subject to both the present and the past.

December Event and Golf

The annual Cairo Christmas Parade takes place every December in downtown Cairo. It features marching bands, decorated floats, special guests and Santa Claus. If you want to plan your trip around the parade, check the event dates for the relevant year.

Cairo Country Club has an 18-hole championship golf course. The course is 6,909 yards long and has a par of 72. The putting green is lit for extended use at the beginning and end of the day. The number of holes, length and par are the course’s specific details; the lighting applies to the putting green.
