Cherokee County lies in the foothills of the Northwest Georgia Mountains. Gardens, cycling and horseback riding trails, bodies of water, and historic sites offer different focal points for planning a trip. When choosing Cherokee for a hotel stay, you can first decide whether nature activities, water, or local history should be the focus.

Gardens and time outdoors

The Japanese Hill and Pond Stroll Garden, “Tsukiyama,” at Gibbs Gardens spans more than 40 acres. Its full name describes a Japanese hill-and-pond garden; “Tsukiyama” is also the name used for it. This makes a garden with a clearly defined design a distinct focal point alongside activities on trails and by the water.

Gibbs Gardens’ visitor offerings include the Arbor Café. It serves sandwiches, salads, snacks, desserts, and drinks to go, as well as food and drinks outdoors. You can account for this combination as a separate dining option when planning your visit; check the café’s current information before you go.

Trails and water

The Blankets Creek trail system consists of seven distinct trails and has a clear focus on cycling. The Garland Mountain Horse & Hiking Trails offer a different kind of experience, running through more than 940 wooded acres in northwest Cherokee County. This gives you a clear contrast when choosing an activity: cycling on the Blankets Creek system or hiking and horseback riding at Garland Mountain.

At full pool, Lake Canton at Hickory Log Creek Reservoir covers about 411 acres. Its shoreline is about 15 miles long, and it is surrounded by a 150-foot buffer strip. The area, shoreline length, and buffer describe different features of the same reservoir.

J.J. Biello Park spans 470 acres along Rubes Creek and the Little River. In Canton, a 58-hectare park site has a public canoe launch and an approximately 800-meter concrete path connected to the Etowah River Trail and Heritage Park. Here, a measured trail distance and a canoe launch are the distinct options in focus.

Fishing information also varies by location: Cherokee Veterans Park has a pond for catch-and-release fishing. Fishing at Long Swamp Creek is permitted with a Georgia Fishing License. Check the current license requirements before fishing at Long Swamp Creek.

History and orientation

At the Cherokee County History Center, visitors explore the galleries on a self-guided basis; a visit typically takes 45 to 60 minutes. You can include this time range as a separate item in your day’s plans.

Georgia National Cemetery is near the Etowah Indian Mounds. Members of the Mississippian culture built the mounds between 1000 and 1550 AD. This time span covers several centuries and places the site within a specific historical culture.

For travel, Cherokee County is conveniently located near the I-575 and I-75 highways. Together with its position in the foothills of the Northwest Georgia Mountains, this provides a broad geographic orientation.
