Fern Park can be best understood through the history of its fern nurseries and early settlement development. The local history connects individual properties with fern cultivation, a company with a specific local address, and historical names with places in today’s cityscape. This connection makes settlement and the fern industry the common thread as you get to know Fern Park.

The Fern Industry and Settlement

Gordon Barnett established Fern Park as a settlement in 1923. In 1925, the Barnett Fern Company began operations in Fern Park; its headquarters were at the present-day corner of Oleander Way and Anchor Road. Fern Park Estates was developed as a residential community with individual properties, each of which had a fern nursery.

Two scales of production existed side by side here: the fern nurseries in the Fern Park area were among the largest producers in the world, while Asparagus Plumosus refers to a specific species grown for floral arrangements in the United States and Canada.

The historic fern nurseries primarily employed African American workers, who lived in shotgun houses at the local Evergreen Cemetery and in the surrounding area. A shotgun house is a narrow style of home whose rooms are typically arranged one behind another. Evergreen Cemetery was also known as Fern Park Cemetery and Altamonte and Fern Park Community Cemetery; all three names refer to the same cemetery.

Names and Historic Places

An image of the Standard Fern Nursery in Fern Park is dated April 1, 1930. The former Standard Fernery and packing house stood where the Home Depot and Publix plazas are today.

The area became known as Fern Park; a post office under that name was established there in 1928. Fern Park, Fern Park Estates, and Barnett Fern Company refer to different things: the name of the area, a residential community, and a company. This distinction keeps the local history clear, even though the names sound similar.

Chronologically, the settlement was established in 1923, the Barnett Fern Company started in 1925, a post office under the name Fern Park opened in 1928, and the image is dated April 1, 1930.
