Montezuma County can be explored for trip planning through its landscapes, cultural history, and outdoor activities. Mesa Verde National Park lies in the south-central part of the county on a sloping plain cut by long, deep canyons. Canyons of the Ancients National Monument occupies most of the western side of the county. You can tailor your search to the destinations that interest you most.

Mesa Verde: Canyons and Scenic Overlooks

Wind and water erosion have divided Mesa Verde National Park into a series of canyons and mesas. Elevations range from about 6,000 feet on the canyon floors to Park Point at 8,572 feet (2,612 m), the highest point in the park. A short, steep, paved trail at Park Point offers panoramic views of the Four Corners region.

The scenic overlooks differ in their views and trails. The Soda Canyon Trail is a 1.2-mile (1.9 km) loop and offers the only views of Balcony House. The Point Lookout Trail climbs steep switchbacks from Morefield Canyon. From there, you can see the San Juan and La Plata Mountains, as well as the Mancos and Montezuma valleys.

It is easy to distinguish the overlooks by what they offer: Park Point provides panoramic views of the Four Corners region, the Soda Canyon Trail offers views of Balcony House, and Point Lookout offers mountain and valley views. The trail descriptions also differ: a short, steep, paved trail at Park Point, a loop of specified length at Soda Canyon, and a climb with steep switchbacks at Point Lookout.

Cultural Sites and Museum

Thousands of cultural sites are spread across 176,000 acres in Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. The remains reflect connections between people and the land spanning more than 12,000 years. Yucca House National Monument is an ancestral Puebloan archaeological site in Montezuma County. These places add a cultural-historical perspective to a trip, distinct from the scenic overlooks and landforms of Mesa Verde.

Montezuma Heritage Museum offers accessible galleries and restrooms for wheelchair users. Travelers looking for specific accessibility information can find a clearly stated detail about a place to visit.

Outdoor Activities and Road Planning

Seventy-six percent of Montezuma County is public land, with numerous hiking, biking, horseback riding, and OHV trails. Phil’s World offers a designated mountain biking trail network in Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. This provides both general information about opportunities on public land and a specifically named mountain biking trail network as distinct points of reference.

It is also worth checking the details when choosing a route. The Trail of the Ancients Scenic Byway is a 114-mile paved route through much of Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. Some roads in the monument, however, are unpaved; a four-wheel-drive vehicle may be required in wet or icy conditions. The paved route and the condition-dependent guidance for some roads describe different circumstances.

Events and Reasons to Visit

The Montezuma County Fairgrounds hosts the Four States Ag Expo, the Montezuma County 4-H Fair, rodeos, exhibitions, livestock clinics, and other regional events. If an event is the reason for your trip, check the dates before making plans. Sutcliffe Vineyards regularly hosts public and members-only events, including wine and food pairings.

The different highlights can help you organize destinations according to your interests.
